Thinking about Trump's quote about how "there are ways" for him to have a third term. And how around that time he called Zelenskyy a dictator because Ukraine hadn't held an election while at war.

They accuse people of what they're planning to do.

Watch their accusations.

if you are a cis person it costs you nothing to just say today that you see & hear your trans sisters & brothers & others over in the UK today -- and around the world, too, knowing that rulings like today's ripple out in ugly ways.

Watching the rise of US-funded concentration camps and extraordinary rendition, and feeling awfully stupid for all those pandemic jokes about "can't we have some precedented times?".

I didn't mean "let's repeat the precedents we should have learned from".

Remember when tech companies would do fun april fools day jokes, instead of trying to overthrow democracy?

It's super weird that if you search the news for "Tesla rebates canada" most of the headlines report that canada is banning Tesla from the EV rebate program "amid tariffs", "due to tariffs", "because of tariffs", etc.

Only 1 in 10 connect it to them falsifying sales to game the system for $43m.

It's funny how fixated Comp Sci curriculum is on recursion, when there are so few cases that really need it.

Like in 20 years of programming, I bet I've written fewer than 8 real-world recursive functions.

And at least two of them were shamefully unnecessary.

The problem with pointing out systemic bias too precisely, is that when you make someone with privilege over you uncomfortable they start seeing you as less credible in general.

I dunno man.

This is the first march that I've felt a little nostalgic for 2020. I had the same feeling that if we didn't correct course millions were going to die. But at least the media was trying to give us good information and there were global organizations dedicated to information.

Me: "So there was a time in the 90s when I had heard 'One Gun' on Much Music, but I didn't know who did it..."

Ian: "yeah?"

Me: "and there was this record store. And a cute boy that worked there. That I was kind of into. So I went and asked him about the song..."

Having deviled eggs for supper be like, "Do you want four hardboiled eggs?"

"No, that's way too many eggs."

"What if I mashed the yolks with mustard and... more egg?"

I'm just so over the suit discussion because we all know if he was in a suit, 100% of you "hE should sHoW reSpEcT" whiners would instead be sneering that things can't be that dire in Ukraine if he's jetting around being fancy with world leaders.

What metrics should I be looking at when I'm feeling hopeless about Trump politics and want to comfort myself with schadenfreude?

Besides Tesla stock prices of course.

Though a fun outcome of our cat health emergencies is my cat's low-key confusion (now that he's adequately treated and doesn't have to sleep all day) over being awake long enough to feel boredom.
March 1, 2025 at 10:29 PM
My partner's phone showed him his "February memories" and it was photos of medical info for our cat health emergencies, rage about trying to buy Canadian, and blackboard full of formula notes we weren't understanding in class.

Verdict on February: not worth remembering.

I love when I put my paint chips down at the paint counter and their eyes widen and they just say, "exciting!" 😆

Anyhow, it would be a great time for Canada to implement Universal Basic Income.

Put our reluctant tariff money toward raising the social safety net for the people it's going to hurt worst.

Trudeau, you've got nothing to lose, and a potential legacy to gain!
February 3, 2025 at 1:22 AM
It is super weird, as a Canadian, that every comment thread I find myself in about the tariffs has a stream of Americans saying sorry to Canada.

Friends, that's our line! Are you okay? (you don't have to answer. We know you're not.)

I suppose that the experts will advise that you shouldn't feed birds by hand when there's cases of avian flu on the rise, but have they considered that chickadees are too best friend to make me sick?

i will give the press corpse some credit, these questions are better than we have heard from them in some time
COLLINS: We don't even yet know the names of the people killed and you're blaming Dems and DEI policies. Don't you think you're getting ahead of the investigation?

TRUMP: No, I don't think so

C: Does it comfort their families to hearing you blaming DEI?

R: That's not a very smart question

So let's say I'm thinking of painting my kitchen cabinets green.

The vibe my partner and I are feeling sits somewhere between mid-century modern and craftsman.

What shade of green are we feeling?

I think it's avocado. But I'm open to being convinced on a more daring kelly, emerald, or lime.

The thing is...

and I know we all know this...

but the thing is, a normal human being,

(the kind with normal views on nazi salutes),

on having their gesture be perceived as a *possible* nazi salute,

would be horrified. Not justifying it.

I was telling my coworkers, who hadn't heard of Donovan Woods, that that's probably normal since he's a cdn indie, folk singer.

"When I meet people who have heard of him, though, they're often pretty big fans."

"Oh yeah," my colleague said, "so like Quentin Tarantino."

.... what?
