Marine volcanologist. All opinions my own. She/her.
It was a huge privilege to contribute to this plan for the future of marine science infrastructure and the final report is a huge community effort. The UK have long been world leaders in marine hazards research and long may it continue!

The best thing about this job is that you get to keep learning. Absolutely incredible day looking at landslide and lahar deposits off Etna with amazing INGV scientists and @mikeaclare.bsky.social (who always teaches me things I don’t know about sediments).

Great to see @mikeaclare.bsky.social @noc.ac.uk quoted in this piece in the Guardian today www.theguardian.com/news/2025/se... about the Hunga Volcano eruption and the subsequent telecommunications outage in 2022.

Check out both a really exciting paper on the Santorini seismic swarm earlier this year from some of my excellent colleagues: www.nature.com/articles/s41... AND a really good write up in National Geographic by @squigglyvolcano.bsky.social: www.nationalgeographic.com/science/arti...
This year thousands of mysterious earthquakes hit Santorini. Scientists finally know why.
During the quakes, researchers were able to track dangerous magma in real time.

Most people I know got their grants on second submission. This new policy is bonkers and helps no one.
Really disappointing new policy from NERC banning resubmissions of grant applications

Many of us, including me, have won grants on resubmission,

using the reviews to improve the application

This is is neither fair nor productive

Really enjoying the “surveying oceanic volcanism & volcanic island geohazards” session at @iavcei.bsky.social 2025. Great talks and lots of fascinating work on volcanic tsunamis. Looking forward to the second half this afternoon.

A really great end to this lahars focussed mini session at @iavcei.bsky.social by @mikeaclare.bsky.social from @noc.ac.uk presenting work on lahars offshore and their huge sediment loads funded by the Sustainable Blue Economies Program.

Jeremy Phillips @bristolvolcanology.bsky.social with a fascinating presentation on how important erosion is when modelling lahar related hazards @iavcei.bsky.social So much work still to do to understand the behaviours of lahars on and offshore.

Great talk by @sofiadellasala.bsky.social looking at hydrothermal records at Santorini in the @iavceisubmarine.bsky.social session. Convincing evidence of vigorous hydrothermal activity in the past preceding eruptions and a great demonstration of why we should look at hydrothermal records.

Research led by @uniofmanchester.bsky.social and co-led by NOC's Dr @mikeaclare.bsky.social has discovered that deep-sea microplastic hotspots are created by fast-moving underwater avalanches. 🔁
