It looks like Apple Music didn't even let them upload anything.

Food for thought, if it truly wasn't Spotify's fault, wouldn't it be a problem for other platforms?

You don't have to answer that. (Even though you probably already know)

Funny story about Amazon Music, you'll never guess who I found on that platform.

In the replies of this twitter post, Casey has stated that it's not Spotify's fault, which I desperately want to believe.
But frankly, I think it's impossible for them to be entirely remiss of blame.
They may not be the ones directly uploading these tracks, but they are facilitating this behavior.

The crazy thing, is that unless I'm misunderstanding, this is not the first time that this has happened to @composercasey.bsky.social as it appears that they have been trying to fight this since JULY.

Here's the "artist" that is pulling off the scam, as now you can no longer find the single underneath Casey Edwards artists account.

The track plays have been transferred over, but the meta-data is all from the scam. Spotify has been presenting it as the legitimate song.

BUT IT'S LITERALLY NOT.

Credit to @ch4rlesiv115.bsky.social for going viral enough on twitter for it to come across the feed of the platform I'm slowly getting off of, but holy shit gang, this is literally what I'm talking about.

You're never gonna believe this. What if I told you that the official Devil May Cry special edition version of Bury the Light was actually being spoofed by some random AI cover? The album art was adjusted, the song accredited to Casey Edwards, but not actually his version of the song?

Decided to play through Elden Ring fully. I think I can safely say I'm bad at souls games.

And all the while, Spotify will continue to pay about 0.04 cents every 10 streams to their artists.

So who again is getting fucked over?

Small artists. It's always small artists.
December 10, 2024 at 5:20 AM
And even better, no-one seems to know how to fix this problem. While it's only presenting a problem to smaller artists, Spotify doesn't seem to care.

It doesn't impact their bottom line and there isn't a legal precedent for anything like this to begin with, so why should they bother?

Here's another article explaining further how Artists are implicated by the existence of fake bands. Ad revenue is pooled together, then doled out to artists based on percentage listened, meaning that AI bands diversify that pool even more than it already is, lowering their overall payment.
December 10, 2024 at 5:20 AM
Here's an article from The Verge talking about artists ad revenue being stolen via a false flag scam. Essentially people will upload AI music impersonating verified artists to attempt and gain ad revenue payouts from Spotify. And Spotify will present their fake music on the *real* artists page.
December 10, 2024 at 5:20 AM
Spotify's artist monetization program has always been a pittance and I can't help but feel that Spotify's support for the rise of AI utilization on their platform is going to lead to bad things happening on *and* off their platform. Of course, I mean worse than the things that already are happening.
December 10, 2024 at 5:20 AM
If your answer was the AI podcast, you would be correct. I despise AI incorporation into tech, as more often than not, it's just bad. So imagine my surprise when Spotify continues on their oddly outspoken AI campaign. (Hint, I was not surprised.)
December 10, 2024 at 5:20 AM
I think it is. There are more people out there with higher numbers, but mine are high enough.
That's not my problem with Spotify though. My problem appeared at the end of Wrapped, when I saw something being advertised on the app. Can you tell what it was?
December 10, 2024 at 5:20 AM
I should probably start by saying that I'm a music nerd and I use Spotify as my primary streaming service. I have for years. The convenience factor alone made it worth it in my mind.

This year I spent over 1000 hours or 47 days listening to music on Spotify.

That's a lot right?
December 10, 2024 at 5:20 AM
Over the past 6 years or so, I've done a Spotify Wrapped (W)review on my socials.

It started as an excuse to talk about my music taste, but this year I sort of went off the rails.

The thing is, Spotify has changed a lot this year, and my wrapped felt incomplete without talking about these changes.
