I joke that it took me twenty years to figure out how to get this off my chest about Herman Melville, starting from my first encounter as an undergrad in 2005. But it kind of did. So thrilled that this essay has a home at J19: Project MUSE - Melville's Idea of a Wife muse.jhu.edu/article/970112

I’m still writing my first book — for all kinds of reasons. But this article I never finished in 2020 (got an R&R at another journal during peak lockdown/toddler parenting /depression) just published. I loved writing about the incredibly weird, compelling Nat Turner of the 1831 Confessions

[Tom Waits voice] frisson of carrion tang
New Jersey turkeys have a "slightly coarser, grainier" meat than ordinary turkeys but the "frisson of carrion tang" in the gizzard has made them #1 Thanksgiving fare for discerning gourmets.

Doing all I could this morning to keep the few undergrads who even turned up awake, & even this ghastly but interesting image, a prop to my discussion of the female Gothic & "Get Out" didn't quite do the job.
So I'll try with YOU.
It's an illustration to Bluebeard by Winslow Homer, of all people.

Perfect ASA experience: present 4 papers on rot, someone in the audience is like “actually this all reminds me of gooning” then we all talk about the energy economy of gooning for 15 minutes

Are you at ASA today? If so come listen to us talk about free love communes, boll weevils, enshittification & the rot economy, and doing amateur dental extractions on your cousin-wife. None of this will make sense but it’s going to be so fun!
are you going to be at ASA in San Juan this weekend? Come listen to me, @ashleyrattner.bsky.social, @ericastevens.bsky.social, and friends talk about all things rotten in this failing state! (Graphic courtesy of Ashley. I bullied her into making it a few months ago, and I forget why)

A thing on my mind again given recent news cycle & prevailing narrative that’s taken hold of Me Too having “gone too far” is that that moment was just a relatively healthy dose of women being honest about sexual violence & coercion. The surface just got scratched and then 2016 and everything after.
