In volatile times, a little prudence might matter a lot. So given how rabid SocMed discourse has become, and given that posts here are meant to be a bit ephemeral, I'm not sharing my birth name here. For now.

But I'm not hard to find:I teach at UP Clark, and volunteer at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani.

UPDEPP proudly congratulates “Direk” Kyla Danelle Romero (BA Applied Psychology '23) who has earned the distinction of becoming the first #FilipinoWoman director to have her work, the 15-minute short film " #Agapito " nominated for an award at the #CannesFilmFestival!

As far as I can tell, #UPDilimanExtensionPrograminPampanga #UPDEPP seems to be the first UP unit to have an official Bluesky account.(Someone confirm?)

Formerly UP San Fernando before moving to the Clark Freeport Zone, the sattelite campus is also known as #UPPampanga, or more commonly, #UPClark.
UPDEPP is now on Bluesky!

While the UPDEPP account is currently experiencing technical difficulties with its Twitter/X account, you can now receive updates from UP Clark on Bluesky by following our new account at @upclarkofficial.bsky.social

There's a guy two tables singing quietly. Either faculty or staff, but likely faculty. This being UP, I can't tell if he's (a) horribly out of tune, or (b) he's singing an indigenous chant.

(I lean towards indigenous chant. I wish I could make out some of the words but he's too far away.)

Checking. Tired. Thankfully SmeaGal and Pippin provide a reliable dose of Dopamine and Oxytocin.

(I just need Serotonin, so sleep and some walking.)

Schedule anxiety kept me awake in bed last night, leaving me literally weak today. Somehow that makes the metaphor of spiritual nourishment hit a bit harder than usual. (Also, yes, postpandemic our Church distributes the communion elements in hygenic packaging - a practice for which I am thankful.)

Didn't have many encounters with Rizal this year, save for previewing the Richard E. Grant voiced Noli Me Tangere audiobook. (Distracting accent, so no.) But Rizal is never not part of the background of Filipino life. Glad to celebrate Pepe's life and works today. Happy Rizal Day, folks.

📚BANNING BOOK BANS

New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy recently signed the Freedom to Read Act — a law prohibiting public and school libraries from banning books in the state and to enshrine protections against civil and criminal charges for librarians who comply with the law. (Illinois,…

Beginning to better curate my feed.

Satisfactory experience re. Soc. Science Academics, Geeks, and Authors.

Need find more illustrators, musicians, book and audiobook reviewers, theologians, and historians.

Feed is also far too West-centric for now,so I'm seeking out more local voices.

Return-to-office (RTO) mandates lead to abnormally high employee turnover, especially for female/more senior/more skilled employees.

It also takes significantly longer to fill these job vacancies after RTO mandates.

I had this talk with a friend the other day. He said that AI has come for creative work first, because it’s subjective.

And nobody cares that much, because there is a lot of distaste for the arts and entertainment world in this society at this time. But it CAN and WILL come for other jobs.
I'm staggered that people cannot see how this is ruining lives. Speaks to a deep envy (and even hatred?) of the people that create art for others pleasure. What will they look at or listen to when we're all out of work? Who'll give them something NEW or ORIGINAL to enjoy, 'the same, but different'?

The textile book (Araneta and Lim, 2014), meanwhile, is hefty, well photographed by Neal Oshima, and from the little I've seen, quite insightful.

Also a steal at p1,500.

The Ceramicware booklet (Tan,2016) is very specific to a particular collection but has enough general information to be acessible. And at p100, it was quite a steal.

We spent time today with a balikbayan friend and her fam. The activity of choice was a trip to Ayala museum.

Which means I HAD to check the shop for any inexpensive publications, buying them before they're all sold out in light of tiny publication runs.

Haul:
Textiles book=p1500;
Ceramics=p100.

This is SmeaGal. It's been a whole week since the scare that got her confined at the vet. She's doing much better. Except she's still barfing her meds. Sigh.

(But at least she IS clearly back to being her usual mischievous self.)
