For me it has worked really well. Ideally there'd be some sort of island in the middle but that's not going to happen.

the poorest people don't have this privilege. What do we need? An entity to subsidize bus fares for the poor so that they have the same free fare as, say, Vanderbilters. From my very window now, I spy lots of large, untaxed, rich churches that could make that happen. It need not be a public expense.

Another example of free buses is the Miami Beach trolley. You have the option of riding a bus with a fare or a free trolley. Some seem to avoid the trolley to avoid the poors.

Here in Nashville, Vanderbilt, Belmont, the State, MNPS, Metro, Lipscomb(?) all pay for the bus for their people but (ctd)
