Synology may be the blocker here. I've got a running script on my debian vm, just synology seems unable to write the downloads even with permissions set (also tried as root).

Spent the better part of my week overcomplicating my coding assignment. Finished it tonight quite easily once I reset my expectations. Silver lining is that the hard way I was trying to do things is the basis for the next assignment. So I got some thinking time in already.
