The Mother's Bistro owner and PMC quotes mark a very interesting turnabout for folks who have spent the last 5+ years painting a picture of Portland as a crime-ridden cesspit. Oh, NOW it's about work from home because the stakes are higher? Got it.
“The Trump Administration’s disparagement of Portland using outdated narratives hurts, rather than supports, our city’s progress. And we have achieved real progress,” Portland Metro Chamber CEO Andrew Hoan said in a statement Monday. Despite rising visitorship in recent years, a military intervention “certainly could” deter visitors, according to Travel Portland spokesperson Marcus Hibdon. “We won’t know until it actually happens. And we trust that cooler heads will prevail and realize that there’s no need for this action in Portland,” Hibdon said. Downtown Portland restaurant owner Lisa Schroeder said her neighborhood, and her business, Mother’s Bistro, are “a shell of what we were” before the pandemic, but not because of riots and protests. She instead blamed changed work habits, “mainly because people have not returned to offices.” Schroeder compared the prospective military intervention to “a Goliath picking a fight with David.” “We’re just a pawn in this game. I really don’t like being a pawn. I don’t like my city being dissed like this, because honestly it does nothing to improve people’s perceptions, and it is so not true.”

Our Auditor + staff are bad ass. Many of their investigations are initiated by complaints submitted by Portland residents.
Portland city council session, thursday pm session for September 4, 2025, Office of the Auditor is presenting to the city council. A presentation on screen says "Fraued Hotline investigations found inefficency and waste" with a couple examples below. "Tips go missing, profits go up her nose (in her office where everyone can hear it…..) the restaurant is not clean whatsoever, paychecks vary week to week, really no structure or explanation as to why. She basically preys on new transplants to Portland who need work, and then replaces them with the same population when they inevitably quit. I have never worked in a worse establishment, there is so much more I could go on about. I vividly remember having negative money in my bank account, and waiting 4 hours on what was supposed to be my day off with the rest of my employees for a paycheck that was days on end late. She also lets people build her structures during lunch service - literally drilling above patrons heads at times. Again I could go on and on, but a word to the wise stay far away"

You've been asking why we're closing and here is the truth. After many years of serving this amazing community, we will be closing our doors at our current location on September 21st. It has been an uphill battle to bounce back financially after COVID. Now, with the rising cost of goods and services and the changing landscape of the downtown area, the owner has made the difficult decision not to renew the lease. This choice did not come easily. It has been made with a heavy heart and consideration for the community that has supported us all these years. But this is not goodbye forever. The owner is moving forward with an exciting new concept on the east side and we can't wait to share more with you soon. To our loyal customers, our incredible staff and the community THANK YOU! We couldn't have survived this long without you! Let's raise a glass together before we close this location's doors for the last time on September 21st.

However, here's what I will say that I wish I'd known beforehand: The communications style of the PNW is very passive agressive. I'm from Los Angeles, we are expected to come off extremely extroverted and forward in that city, and the LA smile, loud greeting, handshake situation is not it up here. People were literally afraid of me. Because of the differences in communication styles, I literally missed it when people were being racist at me for the first full year at least. White people in Portland love to hire us, they love to take pictures of us for their socials and check the box that they have such and such percent of BIPOC on staff but as soon as we show we're real professionals with experience and opinions, frequently more than them since we came from larger markets, they get big mad and say they "feel threatened" and cry and get very overtly racist. Google pet to threat process and you'll see the step by step. Even though technically we're a sanctuary city, ICE operates with impunity here and the Portland police protect them and their building. So far, they have returned the citizens they detain, but if this gets worse, I'm worried there will be no backbone to our claims of sanctuary. And we know ICE doesn't care if someone is actually from here or not. This is where all the queer cousins move to get away from Catholic/Mormon/Evangelical hate back home. So if you're gay or trans, it's very nice to have community. As a very obvious queer person myself, it's been lovely to be in a room of other Latinos and not have to try and hide who I am out of fear. Overall, I do love it here. I got a lot of hate for being nonbinary back home, now I get the same amount of hate for being a Mexican, so my overall circumstances haven't changed. Plus the nature, the air, the food (e…
