Although FGM is, rightly, banned in the UK, it's still acceptable for doctors to modify the bodies of intersex infants even when there is no medical need, purely to ease parental and social anxieties. This can leave people with lifelong pain and other complications.

When I found out that I'm intersex I knew, statistically, there were lots of other people like me out there, but only about a dozen were publicly visible. It has been a great joy to me to watch this movement grow over the decades and begin to exert real pressure for our human rights to be respected.

Why I Speak Out. Why I Speak Out. ​​Everyone should be able to choose what is best for their body. I was diagnosed with Klinefelters at 15 and given a choice to go on testosterone or not. But depending on the state I might not have that same choice if I’m transgender. Intersex and trans rights go hand in hand.

Over 50 evaluations by United Nations human rights treaty bodies on the conduct of various countries have concluded that nonconsensual surgeries to alter the sex characteristics of children born with intersex traits are human rights violations.
