and the really cool thing about this is, doing things to help other people is one of the most effective ways to push back against a creeping sense of powerlessness

i know it’s cheesy to say “helping others is its own reward,” but it’s also extremely true!

A spicy take: “great literature” isn’t great for kids if it turns them off reading, as the constant parade of misery in the curriculum does.

I know it does. My whole job was to talk to “reluctant readers”.

Yes to this! 700 homes in Puna were destroyed in the 2018 eruption. Thanks to the HVO, residents were notified in time and were able to escape. Imagine if that early warning system was taken away!
