GENEVA – Independent human rights experts* today raised serious concerns about an alleged practice of Belarusian criminal courts transferring accused persons to coercive psychiatric treatment in retaliation for their exercise of civil and political rights.“We have received reports about at least 33 individuals, including five women, transferred for coercive psychiatric treatment because they expressed dissent with the authorities since the beginning of the political crisis around the 2020 presidential elections,” the experts said.

Additional states during the #HRC58 session, including the EU, Estonia (on behalf of the Nordic-Baltic states), Luxembourg, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Austria, Croatia, and Cyprus, also raised alarms about the widespread human rights violations against #Belarus' civilian population.

At #HRC58, Lithuania & 26 other States expressed their deep concern about the worsening human rights situation in Belarus, and called for an end to arbitrary arrests, torture, and persecution for political reasons.

The Chair of the Group of Independent Experts on #Belarus said at #HRC58 that Belarusian authorities have committed widespread human rights violations, some which may amount to crimes against humanity, as part of a systematic campaign to silence opposition.
