I remember learning in history that we dropped pamphlets in countries. But I didn’t know we also did that with books like Animal Farm. Only a little ways in & already longing for the days Russia could drop some Dostoyevsky on my head instead of hate filled viral videos.

Happening tomorrow!
Also … a plug for our local libraries. And a very good bookmark.

A local Juneau nonprofit is seeing a 20% rise in the number of people requesting Thanksgiving food baskets this year. And there’s still time to request one.
Food insecurity continues into the holidays in Juneau
Juneau’s chapter of St. Vincent de Paul is delivering the baskets this Saturday to anyone who applies, with the help of 60 volunteers.

This is great movement on the new shelter!
Juneau Animal Rescue is a step closer toward a long-awaited new shelter as the Juneau Assembly on Monday advanced a proposal allowing the facility to lease an eight-acre site at $10 a year for the next 35 years.

And it's exactly stories like these, about local people and our communities instead of click bait, that are the real tragedy in the big media battles. When KYUK loses, we all lose.

KYUK, one of the few sources of local news and native language programming in the region devastated by last month's storm, lost federal funding that was up to 70% of its budget and plans to make cuts in January.

Alaska station that covered devastating storm cuts jobs
KYUK public TV and radio station in Western Alaska serves dozens of villages damaged by Typhoon Halong. But with federal funding eliminated, KYUK makes severe cuts to its staff and news department.

And now for something completely different. The last two books I read were both high intensity so I like that this one is about a magical cafe serving people what they need if they are kind to a cat. 🐈‍⬛

Yesterday was stunningly monochromatic. Today, even in the fog, there are hints of blue.

I had a hard time donating food in Douglas, no response from pantries, so ended up driving out to the food bank and tetrised my bags of food into the already almost full bin💜

Since then I’ve seen lots of local places collecting food as drop off locations. Juneau Urgent Care, the city museum, IDEA.

The theme this year seems to be matching book covers. Almost done with both of these. This is not the first time I’ve ended up with a set of similar covers without planning it.

Yesterday I finished Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop. It was a balanced mix of coziness and deep thoughts about finding happiness and community. Some dialogue felt out of place, but I’m not sure if that’s translation or cultural. Overall, I really enjoyed it.

I’ve read On Tyranny and also Belonging by Nora Krug, which I loved. Can’t wait to see what this combination brings.

I had other plans, but the power is out again so… Time to appreciate this book light and my new find.
