What Americans Should Understand About the Military Disobeying Illegal Orders

"There is not one military oath. There are two. And the differences between them explain exactly who is responsible for refusing illegal orders, why the system was designed that way..."

People think California is some progressive bastion, but with press freedoms it's a nonstop civil rights disaster here.

You've probably seen video of local police senselessly brutalizing journalists. Maybe you know the City of LA sues journalists to return public records it gave out.

Now this ...
The SLAPP Back Initiative is the first-of-its-kind database tracking strategic lawsuits against public participation, potentially meritless or malicious legal actions that chill speech and deter scrutiny.

US Senators critical of Trump's approach to ending the Russia-Ukraine war said they spoke with Secretary of State Marco Rubio who told them that the peace plan Mr. Trump is pushing Kyiv to accept is a "wish list" of the Russians and not the actual U.S. plan

DOGE failed. And DOGE is dead. So I guess government can be responsive after all.
Difficult to overstate how profound a failure DOGE was. Spending in FY2025 was not only than in FY2024 – but higher than it was projected to be when Trump first took office.*

The little bit of spending DOGE cut has already killed hundreds of thousands and will eventually lead to millions of deaths.
Bye bye, “DOGE”.

It no longer exists as a “centralized entity”, according to the Office of Personnel Management.

DOGE was a failure if the goal was saving money. It was a huge success if the goal was giving a bunch of techbro adjacent people unfettered access to govt data in ways that, thus far, are evading the Privacy Act.

Not to minimize what it took to get there, but not only were the charges against Marimar Martinez (shot by CBP in Chicago) dropped, but they're keeping her car to investigate the goons in the incident.
This is the pattern: ICE/CBP initiate violence toward observers and protestors, then they claim they were assaulted in order to use the threat of prison to silence dissent.

The Deputy Secretary of State lied. DOJ got some ICE staffer to repeat those lies under penalty of perjury, even though he knew nothing. Christopher Landau should be dragged in to testify. The attorneys should be disciplined.
Costa Rica will accept Abrego, per @washingtonpost.com .
If true, DOJ, DHS, and Dept of State caused lies to be disseminated to Judge Xinis all day Thursday, where an ICE official testified about info sent him by Dept of State, claiming Costa Rica wouldn't take Abrego.

a PSA: most nonprofit newsrooms right now are probably participating in the NewsMatch program RIGHT NOW. That’s a program funded by a few foundations that “matches” your end-of-year donation.

If you set up $10 monthly, that literally unlocks $120 from NewsMatch.

So who could you support?
i promise i don’t mean to high horse this but if you’re thinking about giving lizza ten bucks there are a lot of good independent journalists whose work you could subscribe to for a month instead

A little over 10 years ago, when I worked at the Idaho Press, I had to make the difficult decision to leave journalism because I was making about $24,000 a year.
Had the same reaction.

Y'all, folks are gonna climb over each other for this job, because that is absolutely *great* money for a journalism gig.

This is also why referring to journalists as "elite" always makes the lot of us chuckle a bit.
There are several replies pointing out how low that pay is, especially for NYC, and I'm once again realizing that people have no idea how shittily journalists are paid.
