Recently read Strange Houses. After much praise across platforms, I was unfortunately let down.
Screenshot of a review by C.L. Methvin of Uketsu's "Strange Houses": Fluctuating between a two and a three rating on this one. It started out with promise, as the concept of the book intrigued me, and I was definitely engrossed by the way the mystery of the houses was presented. Unfortunately, in the final third of the book, much of the build-up of tension and mystery felt like it was for nothing. The previous storytelling method of speculating about anomalies or inconsistencies gave way to a single character essentially expositing the entire climax of the novel. There was no sense of discovery or satisfaction in such a blunt reveal, which undid much of the excitement in unraveling the tale. Additionally, many of the twists of the novel were wild speculation—so much so that I was stunned not one character in the book acted as foil to these ideas to drive investigation. Someone would say something outlandishly presumptuous about the implication of a gap in a wall (for example), and then the story unfolded from there with no satisfactory reason as to why such conjecture was offered validity. The book was fine, and I admire its format, but I do not see myself suggesting it to anyone. It was a quick read at the very least: got through it all in probably a collective three hours.

The protagonist of this novel pissed me off in the best way. I love that he elicited such frustration. If you like getting furious at fictional characters and narratives laced with queer experience, this book is calling to you 🌀🌀🌀🌀

But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed. May we be wise enough to embrace art as cunning, strange, and necessary as that in “Room Party.”
