Intended for service as RFA Surf Pilot in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, its engines were found defective. It consequently became attached to the Singapore base and was sunk in 1960.

However, the Kyokutou-Maru (meaning “Far East”, but renamed homophonous with meaning Morning Sun + East) was refloated in Manila in 1951 and operated until 1964 under the name California Maru.

The IJN's offshore refuelling was by the astern-refueling method, but this had the disadvantage that the refuelling pipes were long and time-consuming.
IJN adopted the broadside-refuelling method developed by the USA in the 1930s, which enabled smooth refuelling with thicker and shorter tubes.

This naval engagement is known in Japan as the Night Battle off Lunga.
And because the Battle of Cape Esperance is referred to as the Battle of Savo Island, I was momentarily confused upon reading your account.
