I have created a website called The Naval Data Base https://hush.web.fc2.com. I am a 66-year-old pensioner living in Japan; I have lived in the blue sky since 18 November 2024.

However, the Kyokutou-Maru (meaning “Far East”, but renamed homophonous with meaning Morning Sun + East) was refloated in Manila in 1951 and operated until 1964 under the name California Maru.

Consequently, provision for mounting guns was naturally considered, and the space for raw silk cargo during the outward voyage could be converted into ammunition magazines to avoid sailing empty.

Consequently, approximately 90% relied on overseas imports, 80% of which came from the US.
Simultaneously, the Navy sought tankers capable of escorting the fleet, subsidising the construction of Kawasaki type oilers.

In 1941, Japan's annual oil consumption totalled approximately 3.5 million tonnes: around 2 million tonnes for the Navy, 500,000 tonnes for the Army, and 1 million tonnes for civilian use.
Domestic production was negligible.

Before the SWW, Japan mass-produced high-speed tankers of around 10,000 gross tonnes and 20 knots.
These were called Kawasaki type oilers after the shipyard, though this was not their official designation.

The other ships in the photo besides Lapwing are Lark (Minesweeper No. 21), with SC-208 alongside (at left); and Swan (Minesweeper No. 34) with SC-356 alongside (at right).

Both the Lark and Swan in the photo are sister boats of the Lapwing, so they are named after birds.

Assistant Secretary of the Navy F.D.R. ordered that new minesweepers under construction at WWF be named after birds.
He was an amateur ornithologist.

This order led to the name of the first boat being chosen: Lapwing.

The name of this ship translates to “lecher” in Japanese.
Consequently, the city name from which it derives is extremely well-known amongst a very small segment of the Japanese population.

This ship was completed in 1923, but was renamed República in 1931 when the republic was established. In 1936, it was seized by rebel forces and renamed Navarra, before being decommissioned in 1956.

This is the Queen after whom the ship was named.
Born as a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the UK, she was named Eua at birth, but was mistakenly christened Ena at her baptism, hence she was commonly known as Princess Ena.

I had just one Afghan coin at home, but unfortunately it only had the word Afghanistan on it.
Sometimes coins will have the words "Bank of" on them, but that's only natural since they're not banknotes.

Philadelphia is one of the Seven Churches of Asia.
It is now called Alaşehir, which seems to have been named after the nickname given by King Eumenes II of Pergamon to his brother and successor, Attalos II.

I learned about Kandahar while researching the names of destroyers, but I had never heard of Antioch or the like.
Thank you.
Come to think of it, there was also Alexandria in the United States.

So it's an Indo-European language after all.
I thought it was like the French "de," but the way Pashutian is written looks like Arabic, so that didn't occur to me.
However, there is a theory that Kandahar comes from Alexander, so it wouldn't be surprising if it was of that lineage.

After some research, I found out that in Pashto, "Da" is a possessive postposition, equivalent to the English "of the." Therefore, "Da Afghanistan" literally means "of Afghanistan."

The old IJA code for "Rise Mt. Niitaka" was "Sunrise shall be in Yamagata."

Yu Shan is the highest mountain in Taiwan at 3,952 m.
During the Empire of Japan's rule in Taiwan, the mountain became known as Mt Niitaka ("New High Mountain") because new surveying showed that it was 176 m higher than Mt Fuji in the Japanese archipelago.

Coincidentally, November in the Japanese lunar calendar is Shimotsuki (the month of frost), just like in the French Republican calendar.
Perhaps it would be better to tell people who watch my Blue Sky that this is the origin of the destroyer Shimotsuki.

It may not seem strange when you look at his biography, but I think it's very rare for a living entertainer's name to be used on a warship en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Bob_... .
