Here in Seattle, furloughed NOAA employees were out in the pouring rain cleaning up beaches yesterday, part of a national week of service organized by federal workers who can't do their jobs due to the shutdown.

Story by @heyjohnryan.bsky.social at KUOW, our federally defunded public radio station.

As I discussed in Talking Climate last year, research shows a four-day work week boosts productivity and well-being — AND cuts carbon! One study, for example, found a 10% drop in hours = 8.6% drop in emissions. So Jack's question below is a good one: why aren't we advocating for this more?

Today I am resigning from the National Science Board and the Library of Congress Scholars Council.

I wrote about my decision in TIME.

Drawdown of existing allocated funds should be okay; what's frozen are any new "funding actions"—yearly increments, additions to subawards, etc. Additionally, non-monetary actions like a no cost extension should still be possible.

4/4 But please don't stop with social media.

The NSF union letter has some great messaging tips for making calls & media outreach too (see below).

And don't underestimate the importance of engaging your local communities and media, esp representatives.

The time for action is RIGHT NOW!!

Climate change is not a religion. We don’t have to believe in it to make it true.

We can say “I don’t believe in gravity” – but if we step off the cliff, we’re still going down. And if we take other people with us, we’re responsible.
