I do think paper played an enormous role in how much realism advanced during the Renaissance. To learn anatomy you have to practice it over and over again and have space to get things wrong. That wasn't really possible before paper became widely and cheaply available.

Yes, even after paper started to be mass-produced in Europe it was mainly used for sketches and studies. Same goes for ink. Renaissance artists used paper and ink a lot but it wasn't seen as something used for "proper" art pieces, only for drafting.
