Before the midterms of 1866, President Andrew Johnson called his congressional opponents traitors and said they should be hanged.

Voters were so profoundly moved by his words... that they gave his opponents a supermajority in Congress, and the nation got the Fourteenth Amendment.

Listening to recorder songs composed by Jacob van Eyck while doing my Dutch genealogy. I like to think that my family was in Utrecht at the same time he was and might have heard music he produced?

Patricia Routledge, Dies at 96 www.nytimes.com/2025/10/03/o...

The last paragraph made me cry:

She had high hopes for the afterlife. “When I approach the pearly gates,” she once said, “I’d like to hear a champagne cork popping, an orchestra tuning up and the sound of my mother laughing.”

I've been playing with the RootsMagic AI prompt tool. Meh - needs more options.

What I find helpful - after I initiate a chat with AI, usually Claude, then I ask it to critique my prompt. The ensuing conversation can be quite helpful. I've even let it re-write the prompt for me. #genealogy #AI

I was just reading the obituary for Alma Mahler, d. 1964. On the same page in the NYT was an obit for Pa Kettle.

There should be a word for this thing that happens when you're reading a news item and on the same page is something either related or absurdly coincidental. #genealogy #history

Society newsletter-done and sent. Inbox cleaned. Goodreads updated. Website will have to wait. Met a friend for ice cream - cost more than it was worth.

Can I just want to go home and read now?

Oh. Weird coincidence? I'm reading the "The Aviator and the Showman" abt. Earhart; is he also? NO.

St. John's Episcopal Church, Johnstown, NY Built in 1837, the third building for this congregation. It was such a grey, rainy day (Thursday) when I took the photo. An amazing edifice.

I had 99 messages on TikTok this morning. One was from Ben Stiller, one was from Girard Butler, and one was from Interpol. They’re worried that I’ve might’ve been frauded [sic] out of some money and they wanna help me. And Michael Jackson is now following me.

Just another manic Monday.

I have to leave work immediately. I just got a notice that a book I've had on hold is in at the library and I'm already reading two others. Must go home and read. Right now.

Being the president of my local genealogy society has its rewards. Reigning in volunteers is NOT one of them. This is when I first understood the true meaning of "herding cats."

Sometimes you just need to hear 200 people sing a queer anthem in a medieval church 🥹🥰🩷Song: Pink Pony Club by @chappellroan Church: St Mary-at-Hill, London ⛪️Choir: @londoncityvoices Arrangement: @benswanmusic A quick history lesson:A church has mostly likely stood on this site, on what is now Lovat Lane, since the 11th century, meaning this small patch within the heart of the City of London has served its community for nearly 1000 years. In 1666 the medieval building was almost completely destroyed by the Great Fire of London, but was rebuilt just years later by Sir Christopher Wren and Robert Hook.Although the church survived the damage of the Blitz during the Second World War, a fire in May 1988 caused major damage to the roof, pulpits and organ, which itself dates from 1848. Also during the extensive restoration, archeologists found traces of ancient graves pre-dating the medieval church, confirming that the area was once part of Roman London!Thomas Becket was born less than a mile away from the church (in 1119/20) and was recorded as a ‘person’ here by a Tudor historian. Talking of the Tudors, Thomas Tallis, who was a composer for King Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I, was employed at St Mary-at-Hill as either an organist or a choral singer between 1537-38. 💒🩷View all 1,155 comments

My favorite feedback from #wordle bot:

“You had two words to pick from and you chose the wrong one. That’s a bummer, but you’ve narrowed it down to one possible solution. You should solve the puzzle on your next turn”

I'm close to getting an appointment to visit the special collections at Hamilton College to look at the papers of my 3rd great uncle, Thomas Sammons. Very excited about this. #genealogy

FindAGrave should add a feature where you could thank the contributor who trudged up treacherous hills in a cemetery to take photos of your ancestors grave stone but in a substantive way, like buying them a cup of coffee or something. Even something small that is more than a thank you message.

AI can be so amusing. Prompted to transcribe a section of a will and make a table with people named in the will and their relationship to the deceased, ChatGPT gave me this. Good to know about the god part. #genealogy

When you FindAGrave photo but part of the image is cut off - sometimes I request a new photo but I always wonder why the volunteer didn't take a picture of the entire stone? Image is very readable but part of the bottom is missing. Time for a road trip.

My personal invitation to Club 1890? The Ultimate #Genealogy Experience. At a cost of $5K (valued at $10K, so they say) - the list of benefits are vague, what is VIP seating? I have to apply? What if my application fails? Why does this annoy me so much?

For $5k hire a professional genealogist.
