German soldiers were better than allied soldiers at the beginning of the war, but as their veterans were killed in action our raw recruits became experienced veterans and the roles were reversed.

No. As far as I can see the main reason for this - and the fascination with saying German soldiers were better man for man, is because they were really good at not looking like they were losing when they were.
