That sucks.

it should be a mandatory medical and therapeutic protocol that if someone has depression or anxiety that they automatically get screened for ADHD,

There’s so much ignorance and stigma against ADHD in the medical industry

And therapeutic industry too sadly

"Common wisdom" says: Taking a stimulant medication "lights up" the entire brain. But research suggests that with ADHDers some parts quiet down (DMN issues) and relevant areas (cingulo-frontal-parietal network) "light up".
On the latter: www.biologicalpsychiatryjournal.com/article/S000...
Cingulate, Frontal, and Parietal Cortical Dysfunction in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
Functional and structural neuroimaging have identified abnormalities of the brain that are likely to contribute to the neuropathophysiology of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In parti...

I used to have my students read The Flies in my Existentialism in Literature course. Existentialism never loses its relevance. I still find myself bringing up existentialism as a therapist.

If he'd left out the dates, I would have guessed that this article was written well over a decade ago.
It seemed really out of touch with the continuing education I've gotten as a therapist.
For example, no real presentation of executive dysregulation.
I'm very disappointed.

I do think it shows a superficial, and flippant regard for mental health.
It's an absurd take on MH dx, something they have no regard for.
March 25, 2025 at 9:06 PM
I also wonder if they'll use the critiques of TDS (insert witty ICD or F code here) to critique (better established) diagnoses.
"If you think TDS is absurd as a dx, take a look at what dx ARE accepted... ". (insert a dx they don't like -ADHD).

Indeed. "I'm sensitive, but not like THOSE PEOPLE..."
March 23, 2025 at 8:36 PM
Her lack of clarity about high sensitivity seems to muddle Central Sensitivity Syndrome, heightened perception (not sensation), executive dysfunction (and probably many other things).
And, the cynical, mind-reading me says that this is her *Mary Sue-ing* her own neurodivergence.

I also find her very problematic. However, I do still always try to explain and normalize (for all my clients) that sensitivity exists on a spectrum. It's not functional to fail to adapt and mod based on individual sensitivity.

In my clinical experience, some of the barriers are also due to the stigma of stimulants.
I hear so many myths about stimulants and so many practitioners willing to prescribe off-label medications (buproprion & desvenlafaxine) instead (as if those meds don't have significant side effects.

So, learning how to regulate your emotional response might help someone

- assess the accuracy of the interpretation
- engage in functional behavior
- develop self-compassion

But the goal can't be to avoid or stop feeling certain emotions, because all emotions are vital for knowing and acting.
March 16, 2025 at 6:06 PM
Emotional intelligence, then, involves learning that emotions are interpretations based on memory and context. They are valid (they make sense), when seen in this light.
That doesn't mean the interpretation is accurate.
Increased emotional intensity doesn't mean the emotion is more accurate.

In short, whoever does violence to truth or its expression eventually mutilates justice, even though he thinks he is serving it. From this point of view, we shall deny to the very end that a press is true because it is revolutionary; it will be revolutionary only if it is true, and never otherwise.

Dr. Jeff Reese at Auburn University has done some research. Here's a link with some of his publications from his time at the University of Kentucky. I'm sure his updated CV had more.
