I think I’ll start with grown men singing about pining for a “little girl.” Then we can talk hair and arm wrestling.

I am so sorry this is your experience. I absolutely see your point about how the rhetoric could fuel harmful stuff. In my book I emphasize how such cozy therapy talk fueled the politization of evangelicals because the idealized family life made others seem even more of a threat.

That might be. And someone who grew up in a community where he was listened to might have other reads on him than I do. I am just curious of where this claim comes from having read pages on pages of his work. It’s so specific and at odds with the tenor of so much else he said to couples.

I hear you! And it does not mean some would take his comment on men’s needs as a command to women to put up with things. He did put quite a lot of pressure on men to tidy up and to focus on pleasuring their wives, though! After all, most of his readers were women.

It looks like they cherry pick stuff to make a point. Dobson was very emphatic elsewhere about women not having an obligation to satisfy their husbands. Not that he did not have problematic opinions about women!
But his insistence that men could not *demand* sex was quite clear.

Where is that 72 hour thing from? It’s quite a leap from what he writes in e.g, What Wives Wish…. I’ve seen this claim before but I just can’t find the source for it.

Some people over here (Norway) were so mad at me when I responded to their call for Christian’s to have more babies to outnumber non-Christians in the future and I said it sounded awfully like positive eugenics. A full-page rant about me in one of the Christian newspapers.
