Ann Wellhouse Botanist, rewilder, friendly, California native seed germinator, love San Diego native plants, love San Diego natural habitats, propagate California native plants
Seedlings always find a way to make a liar out of me 🙄

This group that just came up all have 6 cotyledons.

The true leaves are just starting to emerge from the cotyledons.

Some of the seedlings have 4 cotyledons but most from this seed collection have 5.

Artemisia palmeri
San Diego Sagewort
This is an overlooked limited range gray/green shrub that grows along the edges of Riparian habitats in San Diego County. Its native habitat has been seriously reduced. Native bees love to roost in Sagewort.

Plantago erecta (California Plantain) is one of the host plants of the endangered Quino Checkerspot Butterfly.

Rancho Jamul Ecological Reserve where our group is rewilding is prime habitat for this little Plantain. It is also historically home to the Quino Checkerspots.

Hi!
Have had good success growing Plantago erecta (Plantain) from both fresh and old seed using this protocol.

Soak seed in water 2-3 days.
Scatter seed on coco coir & press lightly.
Stratify in regular fridge 2 wks.
Flood flat with Gibberellic Acid & place in muted sun.

California Honeysuckle (Lonicera subspicata)
November 22, 2024 at 8:31 PM
Have Buckwheat seed germination down & can produce thriving plants for our restoration project so Hermes Copper butterflies have the nectar they like.

Spiny Redberry that they lay their eggs on is a challenge. Some seeds germinate but mostly seedlings shrivel.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Is there a word for native plants seed germinator? Here are some San Diego CA native Honeysuckle, Lonicera subspicata that were soaked for several days then stratified 3 mos.
