Their native soil fills 3/4 of the pot and then there is a layer of burned duff from under the tree that burned to the ground.
As it burned the cones opened and dropped the seeds into the duff below.

The cones stay on the tree until it is partially or wholly burnt.
Then the seeds are released and fall into the burnt duff under the tree.

Hesperocyparis forbesii
Just 3 weeks ago a wildfire in San Diego, CA (USA) did not damage structures but burnt groves of Tecate Cypress to the ground.
Tecate Cypress, a California endemic is host to Thorne’s Hairstreak butterfly found entirely in the Otay Mtn. area that burned.

San Diego Sagewort
This is an overlooked limited range gray/green shrub that grows along the edges of Riparian habitats in San Diego County. Its native habitat has been seriously reduced. Native bees love to roost in Sagewort.

Have had good success growing Plantago erecta (Plantain) from both fresh and old seed using this protocol.
Soak seed in water 2-3 days.
Scatter seed on coco coir & press lightly.
Stratify in regular fridge 2 wks.
Flood flat with Gibberellic Acid & place in muted sun.

Peat beds are being depleted alarmingly worldwide.
Avoid potting mixes containing peat.
Use Coco coir - byproduct of the coconut industry already.
Coir is better anyway.
Peat is hydrophobic so difficult to rehydrate.
Coir is hydrophilic so retains water.

Spiny Redberry that they lay their eggs on is a challenge. Some seeds germinate but mostly seedlings shrivel.
Anyone have a suggestion?

My Buckwheat germination protocol:
Soak seeds 3 days dilute Liquid Smoke.
Pour on flats of damp coco coir - press but don’t bury seeds.
Stratify covered flat in fridge for 1-2 wks. or until visible germination.
