🚨NEW EPISODE🚨In 1602, Savoy launched an invasion of Geneva, forcing the city-state's residents to rush to the walls and arm themselves with whatever they could get their hands on, including, in one infamous case, a pot of boiling soup.

Fascinating account here from Rebecca Solnit, who in 2015 travelled with a visiting medical clinic in very remote Nepal.

Includes a profile of Pasang Llamu Sherpa Akita, the first woman in Nepal to qualify as a mountaineering instructor.

I have a stack of open tabs with short fiction I vaguely intend to read, and this was today’s arbitrary selection.

Whew. Fiction about historiography, and mass culture, and memory.

This is worth a read. It’s more than fluff - an interesting interview with two friends (not partners) in their 70s about their respective gay experience.

Lou Tingle knew he was attracted to men, but never said it out loud. Then, at 72, after his second wife died, he finally had the courage to come out.

“The housing crisis is not a supply crisis” - @mattgrudnoff.bsky.social , here. Not an uncommon claim but the stat he backs it up with was new to me. Population growth in the last decade was 16% percent; the increase in dwellings was 19%.

In my capacity as A Trans Person I think it is very important to occasionally consider questions of sex variation without reference to us at all.

This article is an excellent example of what I mean by the above.

theconversation.com/world-athlet...
World Athletics’ mandatory genetic test for women athletes is misguided. I should know – I discovered the relevant gene in 1990
World Athletics says its genetic test for women ensures ‘the integrity of women’s sport’ – but science does not support this overly simplistic idea.

I'm glad this specifically names and discusses the mechanisms of societal transmisogyny and harsh policing of transfemininity under patriarchy, which results in transfems staying closeted for longer. While the number of trans men and women are roughly equal, trans women tend to come out later.
Critics claim gender clinics are seeing an excess of trans boys. But new data suggest otherwise
Some claim ‘social contagion’ is driving teenagers who were assigned female at birth to identify as transgender and seek medical care.

This is fascinating and glorious. I’m struck by Amanda Gefter’s evocative account of working with Putnam’s un-catalogued papers; by Putnam’s personality and his strong-willed, perplexing mother; his sexuality - the fact he came out in a theology journal! - and so much more.

This, from 2017, is worth a read, not only in light of how little has changed (in terms of polarisation of the electorate and mistrust of the media and weak “both sides” journalism) but also because it has cites going back at least to 2009, for context.
