American witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) flowers in late fall, often after the first frost, when most of the forest has gone dormant. Its fragrant, spidery yellow blooms provide one last burst of color and a valuable source of nectar for late-season bees and moths.

Halloween may be over, but we are finding this late-fall bloom to be absolutely bewitching. While autumn leaves lie upon the forest floor, marvelous, bright yellow petals are bursting from bare branches.

This color change isn't just beautiful, it's a fascinating survival strategy. As trees prepare for winter, they break down chlorophyll and reabsorb nutrients, revealing the pigments that were hidden all summer long. Take a fall hike this week and see how many native species you can identify! #hhltny

We can help through simple conservation efforts:
- Turn off unnecessary lights from 11 PM to dawn
- Point outdoor lights downward and shield them
- Dim indoor lights or close curtains
- Use motion sensors for lights

Nature acts as our planet's air filter. Forests and wetlands absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen, and remove pollutants from both air and water. Conservation efforts, large and small, support cleaner air and healthier communities.
