I love whenever anyone cites to a former military member saying something outlandish, implying they really know what's going on. You know how many people are in or have been in the DoD? And the places we draw from? We absolutely have our share of cranks, liars, attention-seekers, and weirdos.

Absolutely. I think the unspoken question in “why did x succeed and y didn’t” is “can we replicate that success” and it’s muddied by the dumb luck involved. Any of the options *could* have succeeded and we’d be telling a Just So Story about it now.
