It's UK budget day, so I'm dressed in traditional tri-corner leopard skin underwear and novelty foam penis hat. I've undercooked a bleached chicken and made plenty of instant gravy. Once the annual fleecing begins, I'll put on the song of my people, Everything Sucks by Reel Big Fish.

Looking at PC cases and the wood panelling trend is back in force. I'm not complaining. I quite like it.

Here's my new painting. It's extremely experimental, and inspired by both John Cale's 4'33" and the cost of living crisis. I call it -- I've Run Out Of Art Supplies And Can't Afford Nowt Until the End of the Month Except A Bag of Potatoes and Some Instant Gravy Granules. 👨‍🎨

Final edits this week on Uta, or Night of the Soul. It's nearly ready to be abandoned on the doorstep of that orphanage of dreams, publishing.

It's got a vampire in it, and old cinemas, and fires, and doomed love, and dinosaur statues.

The rich were peacocks, Savage thought. In one way or another they had to put on a prominent display of their wealth. Subtletly was out of the question.

De Bois was no exception.

Sunday is a good time to write mysteries, so it's back to The Chapel Book Shop in Soho, to meet up once again with that quiet and wily sleuth, Savage, on the case of a missing inheritance. In, A Savage Will..

Murder existed in abstract to Savage. The blood and bone of it was always gone by the time he reached the scene. What remained were suggestions, whispers, and ghosts. Always ghosts. Crime scenes were haunted places.

The first affected by the curse were the erotic classics in the bookshops. Lady Chatterley's Lover became Lady Chatterley's Good Friend, Who's Quite Good At Gamekeeping. Fanny Hill transformed into Front Bottom Mound, although many thought this was actually filthier.

I'll also be dipping back into my vampire book critic, Mabel Bloody, trilogy today for some editing. :D

Busy day today, unless I see a squirrel, then all bets are off.

My faves are Nong Shim, but the price is way too high, so I only buy them when they're discounted.

Is it just me, or does Sydney Sweeny have the look of someone who'd remove your liver while you were sleeping, then cook and eat it?

I squinted at the formulas and arcane symbols sat on the page before me. Someone, somewhere knew how all this accountancy voodoo fit together, but not me. I was just a guy who’d once gumshoed for a living and was now playing Sisyphus with a rock named ‘The Mermaid Café’.

Scoop Kelly hadn’t changed much since we’d done our typewriter stint for Uncle Sam. He was greyhound slim, with a chin untroubled by any shadows no matter what time of day it might be.

Writing some screwboiled noir for the late evening.

“I could throw a rock and hit a dirty politician. Hell, I could pick up a rock and find two of them underneath. What’s the big deal?” I said.

“The big deal is murder, Finch. Capital M, murder.”

“That ever come in lower case?”

Cholula is my favourite. I was put on to Tapatio by a friend from America. It's a lot harder and more expensive to get over here, but it's superb salsa-like hot sauce, if you come across it and want to try something new.

Reminds me, I'll have to buy some more Cholula. :D

Working a little more on my homage to 70's crime shows, Written By, comes with a companion screenplay of the made-up TV show from the main novel. :D

There were three of them, all shorter than the last, so that standing beside one another they reminded me of a Matroskha doll being unpacked, albeit with a lot less colour and a lot more facial hair. I wondered then, would everyone in the castle have whiskers better than mine?
