Symbiosis and horizontal gene transfer promote herbivory in the megadiverse leaf beetles
Leaf beetles are among the most speciose herbivores on earth. Kirsch et al. show that multiple independent symbiont acquisitions and microbe-to-host horizontal gene transfers shaped the beetles’ reper...

For the last 2 months, we've had an incredible bachelors student in the lab 🤩

Last week, Victoria presented research on growth and germination rates in entomopathogenic fungi grown in different media types🍄🦗

So proud of her and everything she achieved 👩‍🔬 #AcademicSky #MycoSky

So happy to see this perspective out initiated and expertly led by @michaelhabig.bsky.social on the possible regulation of horizontal transfer of accessory chromosomes in fungi
Our perspective on the horizontal transfer of accessory chromosomes in fungi is now available in Heredity: rdcu.be/d9jOR. It may be a regulated process. Very proud of this collaborative effort with Henrik de Fine Licht (@henriklicht.bsky.social) and Remco Stam (@rstam.bsky.social)!
Horizontal transfer of accessory chromosomes in fungi – a regulated process for exchange of genetic material?

This is a great study! I enjoy the ingenoius and simplicity of the approach showing how mutations in a genotype space navigate a fitness landscape with many peaks. Wonder whether the same patterns applies to traits with less hard selection...https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adh3860

This image is a perfect representation of why I've lost interest in academia. Everyone is expected to do three different jobs simultaneously, and I have no desire to do that to myself.

I don't disagree that most of these things are very important for *someone* to do, but it's too much for one.
