Started out playing soccer in Brooklyn. Then became fans of the Cosmos. Now an independent supporters group for New York City FC.

Glad that the World's Greatest City finally has a real club in the Beautiful Game. Blue feels good on us.

Nico assist, Alonso hat trick, instant impact for actually having a non-centerback Designated Player on the roster! NYCFC now up 4-3 and trying to close out what would be an exhausting but rewarding win to end their long road trip

Finally did a piece I’ve wanted to do for quite a while:

An interview with Lianne Sanderson, 15 years after she played for the Independence and now one of women’s soccer’s top broadcasters.

She still thinks highly of Philadelphia, and visits from time to time.

Former Independence fan favorite Lianne Sanderson is now one of women’s soccer’s top broadcasters
Fifteen years ago, the England native made Philadelphia her first of many club stops in the United States. She has come to embrace the country, and now works for a range of U.S. TV networks.

Especially given the coverage other soccer teams get, or don't get, from similar sized local-national newspapers, the regular DC United coverage from Steven Goff in the Washington Post has been huge for the team, MLS, and US soccer. It's probably been taken for granted but it should be commended.

Team president Tim McDermott and principal owner Jay Sugarman speak on the record on the subject ahead of the Board of Governors meeting in a few days:

Team president Tim McDermott and principal owner Jay Sugarman both offered a lot of clues that they might vote yes, though they know it would be a big adjustment for the team and fans.

I wrote about a way to evaluate the MLS MVP race, and combining the things that have happened (goals and assists) with expected possession value. The output tracks closely with MVP voting since 2013, aside from some weird outliers (which I go into) open.substack.com/pub/500wp90/...
