Helmut Abt, stellar astronomer, former ApJ editor, and one of the founders of Kitt Peak National Observatory, passed away today at age 99. Helmut played a large role in setting up KPNO, a new concept at the time of a publicly open facility, offering telescope time based solely on scientific merit.
