Embarrassing confession: I once upon a time thought he was smart.

“You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is surrender, surrender at all costs, surrender in spite of all terror, surrender, however long and hard the road may be.”

The middle bits dealing with Hitler’s military adventurism rhyme with Putin’s Russia more than you expect too.

In truth I didn’t finish it either when I first tried 25+ years ago but am determined to finish it now.

And you’re right — there are long stretches in the middle that can get a bit dry.

The parts covering Hitler’s rise are definitely worth another read.

I give them credit for that.

My unpopular opinion: saying "that one pound in every 10 of taxpayers' money [is] spent on servicing [the debt]" and "[warning] Labour MPs who had resisted £5bn of welfare cuts that there was "nothing progressive"..." etc. is saying some difficult facts. Raising taxes is very politically costly too.

Don't misunderstand -- I get you and don't disagree.
What I am suggesting is to beware *playing into the populists hands* by over-simplifying.
"The lazy mooches and immigrants are the reason you've been fecked" is a message easily hijacked and doesn't solve anything but can make things worse.

This looks rather meaningful.

There have been other issues than welfare fairness at play. And now there is a fiscal/debt problem that can't be ignored.

I hear what you're saying. I caution against playing into populist hands by picking one cause that conveniently vilifies a particular class without actually fixing the problem.
This looks rather meaningful.
