In Wisconsin alone, the NIH provides 654 million dollars in funding, helping directly fund over 7,000 positions. Eliminating the NIH, and even an extended pause in funding, would be devastating for local, state, and national economies.

The NIH is the pillar supporting American scientific research - cancer, heart disease, infectious disease - the NIH funds research about it all. I don't think those not in biomedical research understand how devastating shutting down (or worse, defunding) the NIH is to scientific advancement.
