The president of Harvard could literally belittle and harass women pursuing degrees in economics, and most economists will still argue that gender bias doesn't explain why there are so few women pursuing degrees in economics!

Trump cuts tariffs on coffee/bananas, admitting tariffs raise consumer prices on imported goods. Coffee is up 20%!
Same logic applies to housing. We import key materials like ceramic & vinyl flooring. Cutting those tariffs would lower construction costs & make housing more affordable.

I've been thinking about what Henry George would think of a 50 year mortgage, or even a 100 year mortgage. On the one hand, lengthening the term of the mortgage would make owning a home look a lot more like renting, but instead of renting from a landlord you rent from the bank. (1/3)

While a 50 year mortgage might lower monthly payments, it drastically increases total interest and slows equity growth. Stimulating demand without fixing supply would likely raise prices. The core issue in the housing market isn't financing; it's the lack of supply.

The Fed is flying blind. The govt shutdown is starving it of critical data, especially BLS wage reports. Without data showing cooling wages, the Fed likely can't risk cutting interest rates.

As Redfin's Chief Economist, I love to see NYC voters addressing the economic causes of high rents. Proposals 2, 3 & 4 passed last night and will fast-track affordable housing, de-risking development. With a 1% vacancy rate, the mandate is clear: build.

Being poor is not a crime. We can't just get rid of people who can't afford food and shelter. Once you accept that truth it's obvious the solution is food and housing assistance.

I like living in a free-market economy, but a free market economy often does not provide jobs that pay everyone enough to afford food and shelter. The fix is to redistribute the gains of a free market economy to those who earn the least. Eliminating that redistribution is cruel and self-defeating.

Dead Internet theory is so real. It's clear there are bots that exist to sow division. However, I'm also highly suspicious there are bots to boost morale. I keep getting comments on my tiktoks like "Great job Daryl" or "Well done Daryl" and it's from an account following 3000 with only 80 followers.

The Fed cut rates, but mortgage rates will likely rise. Powell injected uncertainty, backing off a guaranteed December cut. The Fed is torn: high inflation vs. rising unemployment. Here is my take as Redfin's Chief Economist.
