Freedom and unfreedom in work, leisure and citizenship. People who move & resistance to precarity. Policy & practice responses to 'modern slavery', refugee settlement and migrant youth inclusion. Sociology Senior Lecturer, Uni of Sheffield. 🇪🇭 Sahara Libre
Here's me with the then UJSARIO (youth) leader Beisat, 1996. I carried a message of solidarity & support for a free Western Sahara from UK youth. It is a deep pain to imagine explaining to our 20 year-old selves that the world has abandoned international law to fawn to a Trump Riviera pipe dream 6/

Why would David Lammy sell out the last remaining colony in Africa, a non-self governing state whose right to a free & fair referendum has been continuously frustrated by settler-colonisers' Moroccan Royal rule? Under US influence and for football World Cup contracts, it would seem...3/

Great to see some of the giants of the UK solidarity movement's long fight for freedom of Western Sahara at the Houses of Parliament reception to mark the 50th anniversary of the conflict. Thanks to Ben Lake MP (PC, Preseli) for hosting, and to EU Polisario Rep Omar Mansour for a powerful speech 🧵

Today I did something I should have done months ago. I went to an 'asylum seeker hotel protest' to speak to all involved. Protestors, live stream vlogger, police, counter-protestors. My main take away is that anyone wishing to understand this movement should do the same. Chat. Listen. Reflections🧵

An absolute delight to finally meet an academic idol of mine, Ghassan Hage and to re-engage with anthropology of Bourdieu beyond sociology student essays and dissertations which treat social capital as accumulation 🤔. Thanks Manchester Anthropology for securing his visiting Fellowship!

I have some Preventing Violent Extremism chewing gum from the Stockholm Criminology Symposium. What's your favourite example of conference/concept merch?

6/ People are pushed into severe exploitation to survive after months, years of failed protection-conditions reaching legal definitions of #modernslavery #forcedlabour are the extreme end of a broader poverty endured by all. This is why we argue for hyper-precarity as a lens to understand AND remedy

5/ 'I came to this country to be protected but no one cares'. We worked with public figures as Commissioners, inc Kate Adie, Sayeeda Warsi & Julian Baggini to bring urgency to remedy illogical forced destitution policy. I'd forgotten I also highlighted #carwash exploitation here.

Destitution of refused asylum seekers & denial of right to work, then as now, leaves women in particular lacking any real or acceptable alternative to domestic, sexual and labour exploitation. It was knowing this that led to several years of campaigning & research resulting in 2007 JRCT Inquiry...3/

It is appalling to see the exact same mechanisms of precarity & identical abuse & exploitation it produces evidenced in the @4refugeewomen.bsky.social 2025 report as I encountered in Leeds in 2006. 3/

Who in your life has done 'incalculable damage' to the UK's society, education, institutions, culture, arts, industries, parties, music, food, history, knowledge, expertise, social movements, political spaces, and countless support and wellbeing networks country-wide? Reject hate. Reject racism.

Hard to say a goodbye to my dedicated students not knowing if I'll deliver rest of module due to @sheffielducu.bsky.social strike action to protect against comp redundancies after VC claimed £20k in business class flights last yr. But my students came ready with solidarity, gifts & thanks 🥹

Enjoyed a few days away connecting with the land of my forefathers around Rhondda Valley. They definitely didn't do pubs, mind; I found a 1941 Welsh Tabernacl history listing my great great grandmother as the longest standing member. But my children amused how every village has a Lewis pub or shop.

It's criminal justice/crimmigration day in my 2nd year UG understanding 'race' & migration module. Thinking back to a year ago when lucky students had @monish.bsky.social deliver the lecture in person 🙌. Many were deeply affected & chose this topic for their final reflexive learning assessment.

I know the Urban Splash Park Hill renovation is a controversial example of gentrification of social housing. But it doesn't half bring a welcome zing in the late afternoon sun against grey clouds above the grey station.

Brexit one-word association from my students today-some were finishing primary school but remember disagreements at Sunday dinner with grandparents, some not in the UK at that time, hearing about it on the news. No positives here. Defining 'naff' was a fun chat.

Massive thanks to the person who, seeing me panicking waiting for a slow lift with my bike back loaded with 2 panniers, nipped down the stairs and stood in a door to hold the train. Thank you! Humanity is not dead yet.
