Since the 1880s, the complex hydrology of Quebec – a province more than eight times the size of England – has been steadily converted into a vast electrical machine, which now generates, stores and releases power from reservoirs that are the graves of rivers. The largest of these reservoirs is around 770 square miles in area, and floods the circular impact crater left by a vast asteroid which slammed into the Earth some 214 million years ago, splashing rock around like water. The James Bay hydroelectric project in north-west Quebec involves a land area the size of New York State, re-directed four major rivers into new watersheds, and created a chain-reservoir so vast that it has changed not only the weather but also the climate of the region, altering annual rainfall patterns, affecting cloud formation, delaying growing seasons and bringing harsher Arctic weather to south-central Quebec.

Then we have the other special duck resident, this massive Swedish Blue. He’s become very popular among parkgoers after moving in earlier this year

And I got these two used books today. I’m curious to see how accurate the birding book still is (it’s from the 90s) but either way it’s got great illustrations. I wasn’t familiar with the fantasy novel, but apparently it’s set in Seattle!

I saw a couple cool older editions of The Two Towers at the used bookstore today
Old paperback copy of The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien published by Houghton Mifflin with Ballantine Books. It has a cool stylized illustration of crows flying over the landscape surrounding Saruman’s tower, a giant spider inside a mountain, and riders fleeing on horseback A different old copy of the same book (this one also by Ballantine Books). It features a lifelike illustration of Legolas and Gimli in a very classic “old fantasy” art style. Legolas is standing behind Gimli and smiling down at him with his hand on Gimli’s shoulder

And there is a single turtle hatchling, struggling free of the sand, flippers clicking like a wind-up bath toy. ‘Oh!’ ‘Our first of the year, Rob! You're just in time to meet her. Go on – pick her up!’ I lift her tentatively onto my palm and she swims there on my skin, every acons-old instinct in her minutes-old mind urging her seawards and into the deep. She is a perfect miniature of the adult sea turtles we have seen on the beach – except that she is alive. She's four inches long, gun-metal grey, and every detail of her is present and finely picked out. The texture of her skin is medieval, like tunic leather. I carry her in cupped hands out of the hatchery and towards the tideline. ‘Don't take her into the surf’, says Yuvan. ‘It's vital that hatchlings use their flippers to find the way; it helps them gain crucial strength to swim.’ I set her down on the wet sand. The red rising sun turns the sea to lava. I feel tears come to my eyes again, and dip my head to hide this from Arun and Yuvan. ‘Don't get too excited, Rob,’ says Arun. ‘She'll probably be gull food within the hour.’ She drags herself seawards over the wet sand. The first wave carries her back up the beach, and deposits her further inland. She struggles seawards again. The second wave does the same. Then the third. I move to intervene, but Arun stays me with the lift of a finger. ‘She'll get there. Don't worry.’ The fourth wave comes at an angle, picks her up, then sluices her down the slope. The fifth lifts her and backwashes her into the break. I catch the last glimpse of a tiny grey shadow in the inner curl of a wave – and she is gone. Yuvan, Arun and I wander back from the ocean, towards where the city laps at the beach. I'm stunned by tiredness and happiness.

Info for Zero Kelvin (original title Kjærlightens kjøtere) on Letterboxd: 1995 Directed by Hans Petter Moland 118 mins Larsen, an aspiring poet in '20s Oslo, leaves his girlfriend to spend a year as a trapper in East Greenland. There he is teamed with a seemingly rough old sailor/trapper, Randbæk, and a scientist, Holm. Trapped in a tiny hut together as the Arctic winter sets in, a complex and intense love/hate relationship develops between Randbæk and Larsen, who are more similar than either would like to admit. A powerful psychological and physical drama set against stunningly bleak Arctic scenery.
