It was fantastic for parsing and manipulating strings, and system automation, I wrote some pretty awesome Perl programs in the past. But Python and GoLang have completely rendered it unnecessary. I still get warm fuzzies when I see some archaic thing written in Perl, still doing its thing.

May I introduction you to Perl. The language that is almost exclusively write only. Good luck making sense of it after you've written it and put it in prod.

Staff engineer here too. Thing is, hiring manager is gay, so there's a higher likelihood of him knowing what these things are. Not that any of this really bothers me, I've just always tried to keep separation between professional and personal.
