US Expat living in the Netherlands. Generally grouchy about trans rights, the mess that is healthcare, and web privacy

Any pronouns are fine - I barely know what makes sense anymore
Today is a very "I am the Site Admin. My voice is my passport. Verify me." sort of day.

Guess it's time to rewatch Sneakers.

I miss the time when my goddamn TV didn't need firmware updates and I could change inputs with a single button on the remote control.

Very little is funnier than the reaction of a right-wing canvasser than telling them - in your most American accent - "I already voted for those golf boys. Goon Links."

Huh - "Banding: Magic: The Gathering's First Worst Mechanic" popped across my feed.

I don't know man - my memory of Banding is that no one understood what it was because, much like "Offsides" in many sports, the technical definition is miserable but what it's trying to implement made sense?

Okay. Lets see here. They want to show my current place on Tuesday - that's gonna go well. I can't say no, but I also don't really have an obligation to make it presentable? Whatever they know I'm moving.

And oh good - my moving date is gonna be 2 days earlier than I wanted.

I hate moving so much.

Was talking to some folks about Metroid Dread. Still kinda wish I played it - but the EMMI encounters just seem so tedious and annoying.

Le fuuuuck - Hollow Knight, Steel Soul, 100% Completion, Under 20 Hours.

Thats a handful of trophies I didn't expect to ever get O_o

Maybe I'll be able to play Silksong? XD

It continues to boggle my mind that *anyone* would demand Trump Juche. But I guess that's the path the US is going down.

Seems to be working just as well as the original too.

I love watching the US exec branch wanting/trying to use demand side levers to fix supply side economic issues.

Signs I was born as an American:

Whenever I see something asking for my "burger service nummer" (i.e. my Dutch SSN equivalent) - I keep thinking that's something I find at McDonalds.

Okay it turns out: having your parents in town for 2 weeks and then suddenly winning the bid on a home makes for a *very* exhausting time.

In other news, I'm in contract to become a home owner! ... Which I did not expect to happen this soon????

"FDA warns of radioactive contamination in some frozen shrimp sold at Walmart" was not a headline I expected to read this morning.

Okay, as someone who grew up on C++ I'm officially getting really tired of Python's lack of explicit pass-by-reference.

I truly believe there's a better way I should do this but it is *deeply* unclear. I just want to start a session and also update two objects at the same time ffs.

Hmm. In ~1 of 5 runs we exceed the default 30 second timeout on one of the 15 web calls.

Do I implement actual error handling or do I bump the timeout to 5 minutes. Probably my toughest choice of the day.

Yeah, taking a few days off from Social Media was nice.

Good thing I finally have some holiday on the calendar.

Last repost: that didn't take very long. Good job Vice. Fold up like laundry.

Also pretty telling that they don't appear to have a Bluesky presence.

This includes yesterday's article exposing the people behind Steam's mass banning of adult games.

Things are getting more fucked by the day.
VICE's owner Savage Ventures has requested the removal of my Collective Shout articles. This is due to concerns about the controversial subject matter—not journalistic complaints

Effective immediately, I will no longer contribute to Waypoint. I suggest letting VICE's owner know if this upsets you

Yeah okay - the rental situation here being what it is, I've been looking at maybe buying a place here in the Netherlands.

But then I look at the mortgage calculator and become *deeply* confused.

This math doesn't work? That payment doesn't even cover the principal of the loan???

It is, admittedly, a little funny that the only Dutch curses I have are calling something "stupid" or things so rude as to be unusable. Nothing in between.

I could *really* use a good "asshole" equivalent.

Yeah, this is bad. Payment processors and banks determining what can and cannot be sold is the reason why you need to buy gift cards from Japan if you want to buy from DLSite now, and why adult games sites are constantly dodging crackdowns.

Banks are the razor-sharp tip of the censorship spear.
Valve just updated their Steam rules to ban content that “may violate rules set by payment processors or banks.” Sounds boring. It’s not. It’s the quiet normalization of financial censorship and it’s going to hurt LGBTQ+ games and devs

Well, it's 8:30 in the morning and apparently I'm now writing a presentation called "Gouda Heck Does Data Get Stored In A Browser" about cookies, local storage, and session storage.

(This pun works with the Dutch pronunciation of 'Gouda')

Ha, an automation game sale just started on Steam, opening with the new Zachtronics game (the team disbanded then reassembled quietly under a new name) shadow-dropping. Not even early access, just the full game.
Save 10% on Kaizen: A Factory Story on Steam
Kaizen is an open-ended puzzle automation game from the original Zachtronics team, set in 1980s Japan. Design, build, and optimize production lines to create iconic products, like calculators, camcord...
