My latest for @science.org: A remarkable set of high-resolution climate model runs, computed over 900 (!) days of supercomputing time, are revealing how warming-induced changes to Earth's wind patterns due can prime huge spikes in extreme rainfall.

But the MESACLIP runs also do much more than that.

…and then the rest of the White House press corps pushed back against the president’s gratuitous insult aimed at one of their colleagues?

Oh wait! There’s no sign that anything like that happened!

Because access beats out solidarity, every day of the week.

Trump hasn’t caved, he knows his ass is covered. He has Bondi opening new investigations, which means the DOJ/FBI can NOT release the files until those are done. Which, by the way, will be never. And if the House and Senate both vote to release the files? Trump can still veto. It's a rigged game.

I saw a video of a Black person yet again using Leviticus 18:22 to justify their homophobia.

I will never ever understand this. If they had just moved on to the next Leviticus chapter 19.
They will come across 19:20, which was the scripture slave owners used to justify raping slaves.

It’s literally everything that makes life worth living.

And, of course, it’s life itself.

Heartbreak & rage are the only rational responses.

The USDA is the fail safe for SNAP.

They have a contingency fund to ensure it’s covered in the event of a shutdown.

They’re refusing.

Grocery stores stepped up to try and help by offering discounts to any SNAP recipients and the USDA told them they had to stop.

Starvation as a policy choice.

Some people waited in line up for 14 hours to receive a food box from a church giveaway.

500 people volunteered to help and they still ran out of food.

Remember for every one person a food bank feeds, SNAP feeds 9.

By turning off food assistance the regime is starving Americans.

Impact of flights on global warming severely underestimated by many carbon calculators & offset schemes that don’t properly account for taxiing, sub-optimal routing or non-CO2 climate effects which are larger component:

Obama: "The weird videos of a US president with a crown on his head flying a fighter jet & dumping poop on American citizens - that's not even worth booing about. Because all of that is a distraction from the fact that your situation, your life has not gotten better. They do it so you won't notice"

Our world is at its hottest in around
125,000 years.

CO2 levels their highest in MILLIONS of years.

We’re looking at tipping points, 4C & a billion deaths this century.

It’s not unreasonable to demand politicians work flat out tackling this, instead of serving the corporations profiting from it.

Right: What the New York Times covered in 2023. Homicide and terrorism cover about 60% of all news.

I don't ask for the two bars to totally be the same, but more reality in reporting would be beneficial.

This might be my favorite JWST image from the nearby Universe so far. You’re seeing the late stages of evolution of a star like the Sun, after it’s exhausted its nuclear fuel. This is a transient phase where it’s ejected its outer gas layers, which are then irradiated by the hot stellar remnant.
Another STUNNING image from JWST, this time of the Red Spider Nebula—the vast, wispy, gaseous remains of a now-dead star, the white dwarf core still glowing in the centre.
