This is interesting — a recent study of mode share (the % share of transportation trips by car, transit, walking, biking etc) relative to city size and income levels in almost 800 cities in 61 countries. Interesting results. HT @davidzipper.bsky.social

Yesterday evening I left the EU Parliament at 19:30, after a very long day.
Good news is that members of 4 parties are unhappy about the CAP proposal, so there's a potential openness for discussion.
The bad news is that the overall spirit on environment is rather 'slash-and-burn'. Quite alarming.

Farmers at the frontline of #climatechange:
Bogdan Cătălin Andrei, farmer from Romania:
"Without water, there Is no Life... Farmers don’t ask for privileges, only for the conditions to survive and protect nature".
Yet what looks like vast monocultures belong to hundreds of farmers. CAP doesn't help.

Worried about the global polycrisis? About food security, public health, or the degradation of democracies?
Then you'll be interested in knowing that, as a matter of great urgency, the EU proposes a new package to enhance and simplify the production of...
wine.
“No meeting minutes have been shared, no stakeholder consultation has been opened [..]. For those who work to reduce alcohol-related harm, [..] the message it sends is unmistakable: the interests of producers matter more than the wellbeing of citizens.”

Lack of transparency of EU's new wine proposals will cause a hangover
The EU Wine Package — a broad reform of the rules for how wine should be produced, marketed, and labelled across the EU — is moving forward with unusual speed and limited transparency.

I used to think that it's especially in the "developed" world (Europe, N America, Australia etc) that people have devestated nature. But the Andes all around Cusco have hardly any traces of natural vegetation, apparently since Inka times.
So it's not "colonialism", it's rather imperialism here.

I learn that last week the Council agreed on 90% minus 5% credits (so, de facto 85%) GHG emmission reduction by 2040. Not super ambitious but ok given the current political context.
BIG THANKS to all scientists who signed the open letter:
It seems our voices were heard, and not completely ignored.
