Yesterday evening I left the EU Parliament at 19:30, after a very long day.
Good news is that members of 4 parties are unhappy about the CAP proposal, so there's a potential openness for discussion.
The bad news is that the overall spirit on environment is rather 'slash-and-burn'. Quite alarming.

Farmers at the frontline of #climatechange:
Bogdan Cătălin Andrei, farmer from Romania:
"Without water, there Is no Life... Farmers don’t ask for privileges, only for the conditions to survive and protect nature".
Yet what looks like vast monocultures belong to hundreds of farmers. CAP doesn't help.

Yesterday at @europarl.europa.eu we presented the voices of research & science from three projects: CAP4GI, Agroecology-TRANSECT & EuropeLand. Thank you @mariawalshmep.bsky.social (EPP), Maria Noichl (S&D) & Michal Wiezik (Renew) for hosting, and Elisabeth Werner (DG AGRI) for the discussion!

Preparing my presentation for tomorrow's event in the EU Parliament, bringing the joint views of science and farmers with regards to the Common Agricultural Policy. We'll present results from three projects, especially @agtransect.bsky.social.

I used to think that it's especially in the "developed" world (Europe, N America, Australia etc) that people have devestated nature. But the Andes all around Cusco have hardly any traces of natural vegetation, apparently since Inka times.
So it's not "colonialism", it's rather imperialism here.

4/5 Finally, we harvested solutions to the polycrisis. (Not many papers here). Most proposed solutions fell into the "design" category, i.e. a need to reshape our society, our economy, and the way we behave and consume.
Importantly, a key result was a need to improve governments and institutions.
October 12, 2025 at 8:40 PM
2/5 We harvested 23 different global crises, fitting into three clusters of categories: environmental (climate change, bioiversity loss, water crisis etc), socio-political (health, inequality, conflicts and wars, etc), and economic/financial (no, these two are not similar).

1/5 "Characterizing the Global Polycrisis: A Systematic Review of Recent Literature" - newly published in Annual Review of Env. & Resources (Rakowski & Schaan et al. 2025)!
We harvested all papers on the global polycrisis and analysed a) what it is, b) its components, c) drivers, and d) solutions.

Interesting exchange today in Paris with the owner of 42Degrees, a tiny restaurant serving fabulous vegan raw food.
It is at risk because customers shift back to junkfood as part of the anti-environment trend.
If such businesses link to butterfly-friendly farming, could this help? We'll explore!

Anyone thinking that having a car or two is ''quality of life'', should pay a visit to Paris to experience a city where a car is not only 'not necessary' but even a burden.
Paris was transformed by improving public transport, extending bike lanes, and by converting streets to green spaces. Amazing.

Cupido argiades (short-tailed blue) used to be quite rare but became common in Leipzig in the past 2-3 years. Is this happening also in other places in Germany/Europe? If so, could it be some sort of an adaptation to changing conditions?

Polyommatus icarus (common blue), egg-laying on clover - observed during a 15min count in Budapest.
The lawn was cut on the next day.

In Manu Learning Centre we joined the volunteers in preparing, hanging & checking butterfly traps at 1.5, 12 & 20m heights. These monitoring efforts run now for 10 years, alternating between Tuna and Banana-traps.
Please tell me if you know of similar efforts somewhere else, as this is tremendous!

Ever heard of zombie insects? The parasitic fungus, Cordyceps, not only mutilates their bodies to awkward shapes but also manipulates their behaviour.
When they die, the fungus extends out of their bodies to disperse further.

...and the diversity of butterflies, of course...
(the one at hand is merely playing dead).

A test of the 15-minute count method for puddling butterflies on the riverbank seems quite effective: I managed to phptograph all but 2 species of passing-by whites.

Then there are the arthropods, be it on day or night - mostly spiders shine back to the light, but many others too.

Five weeks in South America, first in Peru and then in Argentina: In the coming weeks I'll be posting some pictures, impressions and lessons. I'll start with Manu NP i.e. our trip into the Amazon: nature at its best. The best IMO is the forest's 'nightlife', especially with a UV light is at hand.

I normally avoid X/twitter, but see below: Apparently there is a 2nd proposal for the Peruvian gov to vote 4 allowing material extraction (e.g. oil) in protected areas. If passing, it could cancel tens of years of efforts to protect Peru's most valuable resource. International help is sought.
July 12, 2025 at 11:48 PM
Byond biodiversity, what's at stake is the future of all protected areas in Peru, the future of native people and the future of the Amazon - with global impacts on all of us. Not a reasonable price to pay, I guess? I hope people help the Peruvian gov to come to its senses.

Delayed mowing in the nearby park is enough for counting 4 common blues on an 500m2 area.

15 minutes point count might be very short if there is much to see, but can admittedly be pretty boring in a ''control'' site like this.
But this year we really want to compare 'measures' versus 'control' sites, in urban and rural areas.
Are you in?
