The TOW Center asked eight generative search tools to identify the source article, the publication and URL for 200 excerpt extracted from news articles by 20 publishers. Each square represents the citation behaviour of a response. Perplexity Pro got more things right, about half, compared to Gemini which got almost all wrong.

Genetic contributions to LECA. LECA’s gene repertoire was chimeric, containing genes derived from the Asgardarchaeota-derived host cell, mitochondrial endosymbiont, and potentially other prokaryotic sources, along with a set of eukaryote-specific genes that evolved after the divergence of eukaryotes from prokaryotes.
