From January 1, 2025 to June 23, 2025, 2,301,239 searches were made on SCSO’s Flock Network. Just 110,069, or 4.8%, of those searches were made by the SCSO, the Spokane Police Department and the Spokane Tribal Police Department.

Oh shit range coming in hot! Seriously though, these staff cuts are so bad. Hopefully the Wilkerson/Dillon ammendment will pass. If council members want to fire staffers they should do that through the normal process and not hide behind budget cuts

What happened to all that we need to respect the will of the voters energy that they had around prop 1?
ANDREW CHANSE: You know, we're in a situation and we've been in this situation, you know, for the past 12, 13 years where the general fund just really doesn't support library operations in an adequate way. And we're told as a department to go get the money and ask the public for their vote for our operations. And the public has emphatically supported us each time. I've implemented now three levy measures for operations and one bond measure to redo our facilities. And they vote yes. So to turn around when we last went for our ballot measure in 2024, 2025 is the first year of this levy. And to receive a cut, it just doesn't make sense. It's going against what the people had said they wanted. And, you know, I think that we have to honor what the people voted for. Otherwise, you know, we're disenfranchising our voters.

OK spent 30 minutes on this so it's rough and imperfect, but here is a list of charges that are almost exclusively (red) or mostly (yellow) used against the unhoused. This chart shows a count of every time one of these charges showed up on the Spokane Jail Docket between October 1st and October 28th

Unfortunately this ordinance is explicitly not a call to build out services. It is a call to the Spokane Police to arrest people for unhoused in public. Its an ugly law in more ways than one.
"I hope this ordinance is a call to action to further build that infrastructure" Dillon said "We need more places for people to put their heads at night. That'd absolutely true. Our services are not commensurate to the need"

I used to do some (very amateur) astrophotography. I'd really like to get into it again. Here's a few of my favorites, I think these are from 2017-18. Descriptions in the alt text

Focus of the image is uneven due to being taken with a webcam I bought at a thrift store and cut the lense off so I could plug it into the back of my telescope. The uneven focus combined with high contrast shadows from the area of the moon being near the terminator when it was taken gives the impression that you might be flying over the surface The orion nebula. Another week another meeting where spokane city council is giving SPD more money and tools to brutalized protestors and the homeless. Anyone who votes yes for this LRAD does not stand in solidarity with protestors period.

Long range acoustical devices It’s a mouthful of a name, but nestled in the consent agenda is an $88,045 contract for the Spokane Police Department to purchase two long range acoustical devices (LRADs). They say it’s to enhance communication at protests, like a really loud bullhorn, allowing police orders to travel long distances and actually communicate dispersal orders (which many members of the community said they couldn’t even hear at the June 11 protests before officers started using less lethal weapons on the crowd.) However, the specs for the system the city intends to buy also describe it as a “Safer alternative to non-lethal and kinetic measures,” and reports from places it has been used, like Serbia, describe it as “a sound from hell.” The same system has also been used on migrants in Greece to deter border crossings. So while it could be used to more effectively communicate with protesters, it could also be used to cause them extreme pain.
