I'm here to keep in touch with how people in the scientific world are thinking. I'd love to see more chemistry and maths on here. And taxonomy. Biodiversity means nothing if you can't distinguish your dandelion micro-species.

That's a lot of money, but after 2 day's campaigning its almost 1.5% there. The big money takes a bit of thought.

I just found this on Substack. It's from Washington DC. Apart from Limax spp I have never heard of this behaviour before. It loks liek an Oxychilid.

Noticed this tiny snail shell suspended by two gossamer threads from the suet cage. I’ve come upon leaves “levitating” by invisible silk-threads before, but never before a little shell.

It'll Be Fun, They Said so I read on, and on, and didn't want to stop. Which is quite a recommendation from me.

@bsbibotany.bsky.social excellent email from Kevin Walker on the need to plan future work. Upgrading all the local tetrad surveys to monad will fill in the next few years.

Not a single international cargo ship at the Port of Seattle. The port is dead. The last ship from China will dock at a West coast port on the 29th, and the last Chinese ship will dock on the East coast around May 10th. After that, there will be no more shipments arriving from China. We’re screwed.

We were robbed of our right to live, work, study, and love in 30 countries by the worst abuses of democracy in modern British history.

@bsbibotany.bsky.social Ddb is intermittently failing to import from the recording app. I have about 8 records that won't move across since yesterday pm, despite re-editing them.

Important. You can plant a load of seed to regenerate facsimile species rich grassland but you don't get back the full ecosystem with all its invertebrates for a very long time - 75yrs here. But this assumes all the needed invertebrates have somewhere nearby to come back from!

I would imagine there are many more like these that are eyeing up other alternatives. There will be an ripple effect for the entire world to choose something else than starlink.

By the way, China is a reliable ally. From day 1, they have faithfully been supporting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.

'Sell America'
Cavorting has a price:

“Musk may be able to attend cabinet meetings, but at the end of the day, Big Oil runs the Republican party and Trump has no interest in supporting the clean energy transition. That doesn’t bode well for [Tesla] trying to outcompete” China.

I guess it's been said before, but @marstrina.bsky.social is spot on here, and we haven't learnt the lessons yet
We spent 10 years, give or take, being told to "repeat after me" on a variety of contested issues that were deemed uncontestable. Opinions on minor political controversies achieved the status of firing offences. Mobs of self-appointed censors rampaged on Goodreads & Instagram, distorting 》

Is this news? It has always be the big mammals, the butterflies and the orchids that get the attention. The exception seems to be the UK SSSI designation, which perhaps because it is habitat-oriented does capture e,.g. wax-cap fungi. Of course that doesn't mean money.
