Gender attitudes are likely more important than gender alone.
The literature confirms that hostile and modern sexism played a role in Trump’s election and probably the success of other radical/far-right parties.

I identified 97 studies (including 84 after Trump was elected in 2016 and 42 on that election alone).
Most of the papers have been dedicated to the US. I hope the questions included in the recent @ess-survey.bsky.social will lead to many new studies on Europe.

Many studies attribute the success of right-wing parties to sexism.

What is sexism? How is it measured? How does it influence elections?

My systematic review of studies on sexism as a predictor of political behavior and attitudes is about to appear in @poqjournal.bsky.social!

Some questions never get old in the social sciences.
You can use very old ideas, adapt them to new contexts, and make a huge contribution.

Over the last decades, tertiary education has expanded rapidly - especially for women. They have overtaken men in all EU countries and the gaps keep growing in many of them.

In four countries, the gender gap is larger than 20 percentage points.

Are we ready for any egalitarian policies?

This headline is incredibly satisfying:
"The Ministry of Education wants to improve boys' education. It will appoint a representative."

After four years of my academic and public activity, the Ministry of Education now acknowledges a problem they denied as recently as 16 months ago.

People are more likely to accept gender inequality if it is men who are worse off.

A new paper with experiments on 35k Americans shows that when men are worse off people are:
- more likely to attribute the inequality to a difference in effort
- less likely to support pro-equality policies.

I recently spoke at the Women in Tech summit in Warsaw, reportedly attended by 14k people.

We discussed men's issues in front of over 100 women. I am grateful to the organizers for the opportunity.

You can now watch watch the debate:

Trzaskowski's electorate is heavily feminised, with 40% more women than men (~58% of his voters are women).
Nawrocki won among men. But a similar number of women and men supported him.
Why? Because far more women voted than men - due to differences in longevity and turnout.

Yesterday I gave two long lectures for law students at the Nova School of Law in Lisbon.
We covered "as many research methods as possible" from discourse analysis to quasi-experiments and quantitative text analysis.

Teaching people from another discipline is a very useful challenge!

I've presented the early results of my research on education gender gaps at the @cep-lse.bsky.social.

It was possible thanks to @mobarakhossain.net, @sandramcnally.bsky.social and the @civica.bsky.social short visits programme.

She repeated: "We will also put on the table one more topic: the topic of men's and boy's rights."

We find that the share of women has been consistently growing in almost all kinds of elections in Poland, even though the electoral systems have changed several times.

The systems seem to be less relevant than cultural changes.

January 4, 2025 at 10:12 PM
We do not find sufficient evidence of any difference between the two systems.

Although many more women run in larger municipalities (because of the 35% mandatory gender quota), not more women are elected.

January 4, 2025 at 10:12 PM
We compare municipalities with slightly fewer than 20k inhabitants with those that are slightly larger.

Smaller ones have first-past-the-post (single-member) districts.
Larger ones have proportional representation with open lists (voters choose their preferred candidate).

🚨NEW PAPER in Political Studies with @monikaturyna.bsky.social and @jkantorowicz.bsky.social!

Are more women elected in proportional elections than in majoritarian ones?

This has been long believed to be true. We test it for 🇵🇱 using the regression discontinuity design.

I also asked former 🇵🇹 minister João Costa if we can apply inclusive education principles to boys' needs:
"If you are in a rural area where there is a gender divide, this means you have to have differentiated methodologies for boys and girls and do not pretend these differences do not exist."

Men declare better health. But men also die 5 years earlier with large variation between countries - in Latvia it's 10 years! Dead men do not participate in surveys.

Many more drink harmfully and smoke, but also more men are physically active or eat fruits and vegatables.
