Immediate sour note because Carol, our protagonist, is one-half of an obviously lesbian couple; but their most intimate gesture is handholding, and the show is too cowardly to even put a euphemism on it. Star Trek was more daring in 1995, almost a third of a century ago.

During their attempt to escape, Archer falls to the ground, and the bonds holding them pull T’Pol down with him. Archer has landed on his back; T’Pol lands face-down on top of him. They are positioned such that his head is sandwiched between her breasts. T’Pol is also arching her back. I quickly found this picture on Memory Alpha, where it has the caption “T’Pol and Archer work to get out of their bonds”. I knew it would be there, because you can always trust a community of Star Trek nerds to have a creep among them that the others will insist isn’t actually creepy.

I kind of miss owning a subcompact, but purely for nostalgia reasons; you definitely didn’t want to get into an accident in one of these.

But for a teenaged egg with no access to mass transit, an old, second-hand subcompact was an incredibly cheap way to spend as little time at home as possible.

The front grill *technically* slopes back to meet the hood; and the hood *technically* slopes upward to meet the windshield. But each individual element on its own is very nearly a flat plane, suggesting they consider their less-aerodynamic competition to be, I don’t know, a Kei truck??

I made this a few years back, but never had a proper excuse to post it, so I hope this counts.

The actual dialogue in this scene was intensely boring and I no longer recall it. Instead, I have altered the captions so that Picard is telling the others, “Did you know Cleopatra lived closer the Battle of Wolf 359 than the building of the Great Pyramid of Giza?” (Going by Star Trek canon, this is actually true.) I just think it’s funny because Picard is a big archaeology nerd; and also because 99% of the time, the writers forget he’s supposed to be traumatized by Wolf 359, so here he is literally trivializing it.

A four-panel image I snagged from… Tumblr, maybe? … back when David Koch died. It’s shows images from some anime… Yu-Gi-Oh, I think. I don’t know; I don’t watch anime. Anyway, Panel 1 is an extreme closeup of some guy with brown hair — not even half of his face is in frame — and he’s holding up a card from a CCG that exists in both the real world, as well as the world of the anime that’s based on the CCG??? Someone has covered the card with a simple white rectangle containing the words “don’t speak ill of the dead”. Panel 2 is his opponent. I think it’s the main character… Bob Yugioh? Whatever. He’s also holding a card, but we can only see the back of it. He’s meeting eyes with the guy in Panel 1, ready to play his counterspell or whatever they call them in this game. Panel 3 is Bob Yugioh again, but this time in the same extreme closeup as the guy in Panel 1. He’s flipped the card around to reveal it, and once again the actual card has been replaced with a simple white rectangle with text reading, “don’t be a piece of shit while you’re alive”. Panel 4 is the guy from Panel 1 again, but this time it looks like he’s a vampire getting hit by sunlight, eyes wide, face contorted in a scream, arms ineffectually attempting to shield himself from how hard he just got owned. tl;dr: if you blame the messenger for pointing out that the only bad thing about the certain people dying is that it didn’t happen sooner, then *you’re* the asshole

How it started/how it’s going, Apple edition.

The bright colors, semi-transparent plastic enclosures, and smooth curves were a bold departure from the standard industrial design of the era, which tended toward beige rectangular boxes that emphasized function over form. The design was often described with terms like “playful” and “fun”, and this willingness to stand out and emphasize emotional appeal was considered critical in saving Apple from bankruptcy. A screenshot showcasing the new iOS visual design language known as Liquid Glass, announced by Apple earlier today. It is a view from an iPhone’s home screen; specifically, the contents of a folder named “Productivity”, which includes icons for several apps, most of which exist for the sole purpose of destroying productivity. From the top-left: Messages, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Google Meet, FaceTime, Facebook, Instagram, X, and Threads. The folder and even the app icons are rendered using Liquid Glass, resulting in all of them being semi-transparent, as well as the same blue color scheme. Everything not a muted shade blue is white or gray, ensuring that anyone with even the slightest visual impairment is going to struggle to distinguish app icons from each other; and will likely have trouble even identifying where one icon ends and the next begins. There is also a “frosted glass” effect applied to all visual elements, which means that the other app folders on the home screen — also conforming to the muted color scheme — are partially visible through both the folder and its app icons, meaning that even “foreground” and “background” are being intentionally blended together. Apple has now ensured that even if you want your app to stick out, that’s not going to happen. No fun allowed here.

Finally watched The Substance (2024). Like a lot of recent horror, it had both interesting and banal things to say, and said them in both subtle and blunt ways.

Before watching it, I suggest you ask yourself three things:
1. Am I okay with needles?
2. Can I handle body horror?
3. Do I love ass?

Which was your first Star Trek?

I was raised on nightly #StarTrekTOS reruns, back when your options were “the TV show” or “the movie” (singular). (I suppose the animated series was also out there, but I didn’t even know it existed until we got cable sometime in the mid-eighties.)

This was done to generate FOMO in viewers so they’d come back next week. The credit is in Star Trek’s iconic (if hard-to-read) typeface and says, “Executive in Charge of Production: Herbert F. Solow”. The credit is imposed over a shoulders-up image of the Balok puppet from the first season episode “The Corbomite Maneuver”. It is, even within the context of the episode, intentionally designed to be unpleasant to look at, with its inverted teardrop-shaped head, bright yellow cat-eyes, Charlie Brown frown, pale green skin, and intense unblinking stare. Its back half is in a deep red light, throwing its pale face into sharp relief and exaggerating the head’s odd proportions. It is staring directly forward, implying direct eye contact with the viewer. For a large number of episodes, this was the final image in the montage. As such, it became something of an iconic image for the show. It also scared the hell out of me when I was a kid, and was a recurring character in my nightmares. (The other image that frequently ended the credits montage was a shoulders-up view of a green-skinned woman dancing provocatively, which is even more iconic to the series because sex sells.)

The friction between the writers and the showrunner of #DS9 with respect to queer representation was constant, and the writers basically had to learn to use subtext in a manner similar to writers working under the Hays Code.
