When did audiences get so obsessed with box office numbers, game sales etc?

There's this insanely talented old guy who plays the piano in this café. After he's done a couple gives him his well deserved props and chat with him.
They mention they're here from Austin, Texas, and suddenly the room goes QUIET.
Montana is crazy, man.
