I’m happy to announce that I’ve started a Substack called Notes From the Border about how we connect with others across the barriers of language, space, and culture. My current series “The Other Side” chronicles recent fieldwork with Haitian migrants in Tijuana. open.substack.com/pub/macleodg...

Horrifying stuff from the University of Oregon. What a time to shutter Holocaust Studies along with many other crucial humanities disciplines. Share widely!
A massive attack on several humanities units (Arabic Studies, Judaic Studies, Holocaust Studies, Classics, Religion, German & Scandinavian, Russian/East European/Eurasian Studies) *and* tenure now unfolding at the University of Oregon (a blue state!). Closure of units and faculty layoffs threatened.

Hi, I'm a translator who works for a United Nations agency. As you know, every country needs trained multilinguals & it's impossible to become fluent in a language via ChatGPT. Or DuoLingo. Or Zoom classes. Fluency in a language requires immersion in its grammar & vocabulary, its history & culture.
