Eight years ago today, I participated in removing a huge sheet of lead from inside the walls of a lab room that used to house some X-ray instruments. That sucker was HEAVY!

The dawn redwood at my local park is turning.
A tall narrow tree with a tapering trunk and many short straight branches extending from the trunk at about a 30 degree angle below the vertical. It has pale green needles that are now turning a golden yellow color.

This is Skeletron from Terraria. He'll try and kill you, but not for ideological reasons. You don't have to worry about Skeletron being racist (he hates all colors equally I think) but you do need to defeat him before dawn or you'll have a problem.

I never knew sawflies got this big or so fearsome looking until I found this pigeon tremex (Siricidae: Tremex columba) stationed doggedly on a New Jersey sidewalk. I tried moving her out of the way of traffic with a leaf; she beat her wings powerfully and returned to her post. Strange little beast.

Her body is long and thin and cylindrical, almost the same width all along its length, chestnut-brown on the head and thorax and black on the abdomen with six pale yellow striped at its front. She has four narrow, membranous, brown wings (like a yellowjacket's) attached to a hump on her thorax; she holds them over her back, not quite folded. Her head is bulky, with big black eyes and medium-length antennae very much like a wasp's. Her first pair of legs are visible, and they are the same brown color as her head, as are the two long spines projecting from the underside of her tail, and a third stubby spike on the top of it. The same creature seen from the side. From this angle you can see that her stance is high up off the ground on her powerful legs, with her abdomen slightly raised further in a long graceful curve. Underslung beneath it is a thread-like black spine, her ovipositor. The same creature seen from above and to the front. Her gleaming black eyes are big and bean-shaped, and there's a cluster of three smaller simple eyes on the top of her head, just like a honeybee's. Her head is tilted a bit to the side as she inspects the phone camera held up to her.

hmm according to his granddaughter he passed away in 2022 at the ripe old age of 94! beloved quirky local figure, had all sorts of fans in St. Augustine, FL judging by the tributes on social media.
