America could implement a tax-based, single-payer, portable healthcare system. Could, but likely won't, since it would lower the profit margins of the insurance companies and hospitals across the nation.

In practical terms, it's socialism for the wealthy and monied corporations and rugged individualism for the rest. Feeding endless corporate greed at the expense of the welfare of the people on the misguided notion that these corporations create opportunity for working people, the old fairy tale.

American society has always embraced selfishness, cruelty and indifference. Some downplay these behaviors and attempt to reframe them as positive qualities of a truly free society, often citing 'rugged individuality' while ignoring the corporate welfare state staring down at them.
